Hey, I’ve had 2 corn snakes living together (I know not a good idea but it’s been fine so far) since back in October of last year, which is around the time they were both born. I got them from Pet Co in Portland Maine and when I got them I was told they were both males, and the girl there did the “popping” and confirmed they were both males but she wasn’t 100% but pretty sure none the less. Anyway recently both went into shed mode. One shed before the other so I fed him while I was still waiting for the second one to shed. And about a half hour ago he shed. But the one that was already fed just began pressing his bottom jaw (mouth closed) on the one that hasn’t eaten. At first I was afraid he was going to bite him but he hasn’t and he just ate yesterday anyway. I can only assume that this is some sort of matting ritual, are they too young if they were born around august-october, and would he be doing this if the other snake is male or does this confirm the second is a female?

Like I said snake 1 (fed and shed) keeps pressing his head onto snake 2 as snake 2 runs way, both of their tails are shaking at sometimes (like a rattlesnake) and it seems like snake 1 keeps chasing snake 2 and staying on top of him, there’s a slight indication that he’s trying to wrap himself around him/her but it doesn’t get very far. Can anyone help me and tell me if this is a courting ritual or something else I should be concerned about?

Sounds like either a courting ritual(seems too young, to me, though) or some sort of dominance display or "sparring". I would recommend seperating them immediately, either way...

Just my $.02...

That sounds exactly like they are trying to mate. Or at least one of them is. It could be something else like ty says, but you described what mine did to a T. I definately would seperate them- even if you do hope to breed them one day, because of their age..

I should clarify a little, they would have hatched around august-october, but still they are under a year old. The incident has seemed to stop for now, for a while snake 1 was just laying on top of snake 2 and neither was moving (I think I scared them because I was moving around close to the tank). But they never bit each other or anything, the only thing that looked aggressive was that snake one was chasing snake 2 when he ran away. but he clearly wanted to be on top of snake 2. Either way it seems like it can be a serious problem in which case I will need to get rid of one of the snakes because I live in a dorm in the fall/winter and hiding 1 tank is hard enough.

Thanks for the responses.

Nothing makes me wince like that sentance...

Whatever is happening, it's guarranteed to be stressing them out, so seperate them ASAP before you start to get bigger problems...

If you know it isn't a good idea, why are you doing it? :shrugs:

Seperate them. If you haven't got room for 2 tanks, have you considered tubs?

If the person at Petco that did the sexing wasn't 100% sure they were both males, then she didn't know exactly what she was doing. If the snake has hemipenes, then it has to be a male....no ifs, ands or buts. If she didn't pop out a hemipenes, it may be a female or it may be a male that wasn't popped correctly. All in all, you may have a pair and it may be possible you are witnessing mating behavior. Therefore...SEPARATE THEM.

Sounds pretty much like textbook mating to me. It could possibly be 2 males with one showing dominance, but they should definately be seperated ASAP. If you re-home 'snake 2', you'd better warn the adoptee that it may be a female who's been bred far too young, so they'll know what they're taking on and can be ready for potential complications

This is what pops out when I read your post

It sounds like to me they could have already mated.

If they're not even a year old, I highly doubt it's any mating behavior (not saying it can't be, just very unlikely at that young, imo). It sounds like it could definitely be the begining signs of fighting for control of the area, though. Especially if they really are both males.
