Outreach Event

Today was the Tailgate Kickoff party for the HS I teach at. The science department hosts the party each year for the first home varsity game, and our science students and their families can buy tickets and attend the event. Last year, on a spur of the moment, I took Rio, my jungle corn, and a few other critters with me.

This year, we did a more organized outreach event and it was FABULOUS. We were a resounding hit-- everyone loved it, and we had at one time 50 people crowded around our table. We made displays for Maryland native herps and for pet herps (a good vs. bad choice theme).

Here are some of the pics.

First Pic- My sister was "hired" as extra help. She is standing at our tables prior to the start of the event.

Second Pic- Jess, holding Valen, our ghost corn, while some of the students take cell phone photos.

Third Pic- A view of the end of the table, with Carlos the boa constrictor. Tara was "manning" Carlos, and he did quite well. After about an hour of being petted, touched, and prodded by literally hundreds of people, he opened his mouth and let out a long, low hiss, and we put him back in his bag.

Fourth Pic- one of our assistant principals, who professes himself to be terrified of snakes. He is at least 6'5" and a really big guy... this pic will be going on our "school wide scroll."

More pics. Mostly of our tables and displays. Many thanks to those who helped us out with photos! I know you can see IguanaGirls diamondback terrapins on one of the boards.

Aww, poor Lucky. Love the hedgehog, though! They are sooo cute. Is she yours?

Ahh You did a good thing Kid. hehehe

But ...I don't beleive Tara was at this event.
And you can't prove it either. Tell her I said so too!! LOL

That is so cool! Glad to see it was such a big success, but I'm not surprised, with all of the work you appeared to have put into it. The displays look amazing, and I love your Ghost. Great job, and thanks for sharing.

Great displays, great idea!!! I'm getting interested in hedgehogs, what color is that one, is it albino? Post more pix of it someday please?

I actually can... but she thinks the pic sucks. Oh well, she's in the shower... see below!!

Yes, she is an albino. They are nifty critters but can be tough to handle when they don't want to be bothered! ;)

Aww, Love Tara! Tell her hello for me! I need to get some pics of Violet to you guys.

I'm pretty impressed that your principal was able to hold such a large snake when he's so scared of them. It takes a lot of courage to face your fears, even (or perhaps especially) the irrational ones.

I want to hug you lol, I saw you put Iguanas under bad choice. It is amazing how many people think they make a great first lizard.

I think it is so awesome that you do this at your school, we do similar things here. We do 3 or 4 educational events on reptiles and fish and do a few beach clean ups, plus all the events we have at my work which is a nature center. I look forward to these things all year.

It's cool how much you put into the display and the big-board. I think that's a very engaging way to have students start to learn about different species of animals. You had a great variety and all you pets were in great showing condition. Nice job, and congrats on the turnout!.

This is AWESOME. I think these types of things can make such an impact!

When I was 8, I took a little "class" on caring for snakes... two things I never forgot where why to feed f/t and holding this big old corn snake.... I've wanted one ever since then!

That is awesome your school does such a thing. I'm happy for you it was such a success! Thanks so much for sharing that with us.

Where else would I be? Herps and hot girlfriend or sitting at home alone on the couch? ...where would YOU be? LOL!

I know I know, I was looking for Tara's picture too!

You people are odd...who wants to see me when there are cute snakes?

I actually can... but she thinks the pic sucks. Oh well, she's in the shower... see below!!
;)

There shall be revenge...
