Pearl vs Opal?

So I was talking to a person, they had beautiful snakes out, I asked if it was Opal, and they told me it's pearl but it's the same as Opal but they aren't allowed to sell them as such but didn't elaborate why...

?! Ok now Im nosey can someone explain please!

Im not a pro yet but I'd say it looked like it.. and they called it pearl because they weren't legally allowed to call it opal but said it was the same genes... Not sure really what that was about but it had me curious...

"If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bull$hit"!

My money is on that they have NO idea what they have and were afraid someone would call them out on it if they claimed it was an Opal.

+1 to this ^

HA... I was wondering about that, really glad I didn't buy one now I love opals, have one already and one more is arriving today (A diffused motley one). I did get the lavender stripe from that breeder but that one I could tell for sure... I didn't buy anything I wasn't comfortable with glad I was good with my gut. I am a little sad about one girl I think she will loose the end of the tail tip cause she had a retained shed there that looked like it had been on there for more than one shed and the tip looks strangled.. But she came from another breeder I got it off but I think it might be too late for tail tip..

You really have to be cautious on those places and some of the people are def making a buck on the "suckers"... lol

Thank you guys for your pointers <3 I learned so much in the couple of weeks I've been here!

Thank you, so sweet of you.. I truly enjoy it here... Esp looking at all the pretty animals.. <3 lol

So I have to resurrect this thread.. I found out that there is an Opal out there BUT that is a cross from another kind of snake as well (might be a king?) I saw it on a european page...

Yes Pearl.. sorry lol I have had a couple of long days and my brain isn't working in any way shape or form!

Are they from New Jersey by any chance? In New Jersey, it is only legal to sell certain morphs, most of which are amel or amel combines. "Pearl" is one such morph on the list. So they are probably sticking to the old name of pearl for that reason.

Why on earth would only certain morphs be legal?

I know right? At least it is better than my native state of GA, where they are ALL illegal. Unlike in GA, corn snakes are considered endangered within the state of NJ. So I guess they reason that albino type morphs are very unlikely to thrive and contaminate the native population if introduced into the wild. But yeah, it really doesn't make sense to ban ANY morph.

Wow. Thanks for the explanation. I find that very strange.
