Pix of Our 2014 Clutch

LauRuffian

Perpetual Newbie
Well, genetics say we should have a 50/50 split of normals and amels pairing my classic het amel female and amel motley male, but this turned out to be a vivid lesson in the difference between theoretical and experimental probability: turned out to be 75/25. Ah well. Some of them are already spoken for, anyway, so they'll still be rehomed/sold with little issue.

What's awesome is I had a 100% hatch rate--all 12 fertile eggs produced healthy babies in decent weight. Last year, of the 13 fertile eggs there were 11 hatchlings, 1 DIE, and 1...uh...mess of not-snake in the egg. Interestingly, there was much less variation in size; I had a couple massive babies in the 10g range last year, but also one ITTY bitty 3g runt. This year, they are all in the 7g range, with one or two at 8g and two at 5g. Also, thus far, the clutch is much more even tempered (except for the one nicknamed Chomper ;) ).

I'll post pics of their progress here. Not as fun or exciting as tesseras and such, but I still think they're cute and still think it's fun to chronicle their growth. :)

So here we go! Here are the babes, their weight, and initial temperament marker. You can tell my sons helped me nickname some of them.

Thanks! I think they're pretty darn cute myself. I took a few to a reptile store yesterday and got a lesson in popping, and when I got home was able to successfully pop the babies to where I'm pretty confident I know who is what.

As far as keeping any, we will likely keep 1-2 in the classroom for a year-long study. I really like Henri(etta?). :)

The shedding has begun and the truer colors are coming out! Sunset, last to leave the egg, is last to shed as well so his pic will be added in the next day or two when he does.

I've also started feeding, and everyone ate their pinkies readily--except Crackle and Creeper. :( I tried boiled and then Dawn-washed, and they both just ignored them completely so I'll try again in a few days.

Baby pic time!

Henri, my favorite

Creeper--one of my nonfeeders. :( He's really pretty though, I think. Unusually dark.

Chomper, still very much living up to his namesake

Flick, now renamed Fuzzy by her new owner. She was first out of the egg, first to shed, and is first to sell--she goes home this weekend. Girl is ambitious!

Finally, the other non-feeder and second grumpiest of the lot, Crackle

Typically it is best to wait for 3 consecutive feeds before selling. I had a snow motley eat on the first offering.... and he hasn't eaten the last 4 times it's been offered.

I love their names! Don't forget- males can be tricky to pop. I pop a "female" three times, at a minimum, (on different days) before I'll sell her as a female.

Good reminder Nanci! Two of my females were checked by a pro (when he was training me) but it still won't hurt to recheck!

And it is done! Sunset shed last night. I think he has a beautiful pattern--it's like a semi-motley.

Here he is in better light.

And, he ate readily, so Crackle and Creeper are the only two to refuse their first meal. A nice happy full belly (and a grumpy, defensive baby guarding it, ha!):

Sunset is already sold--and renamed Cheese Wiz--and is one of my two babies getting shipped to their new homes when the time is right. :) Mushroom is my other sold baby who is getting shipped; the owner has agreed to wait until he's had two more feedings just to be sure he's eating well before the stress of interstate travel. Woot!

Flick/Fuzzy is also sold (though still here with me), Greenie has a strongly interested party, and I have someone else who said they want a baby but isn't sure which one yet. Woot!
