I was just about to say exactly the same thing Robbie. Dean's right on this one. Let the snake go.

But seriously... I think your heart was in the right place

Huh. Could have fooled me. Nice to know that our mods can be depended on when someone wants a little help. But anyway. Good luck to you with the snake; I hope it works out.

Well I just know that I work at a wildlife rehabilitation center, and we get things like this all the time. The snake was already in an unnatural habitat, ie, a parking lot, which we at Wildcare incourage people to address. Secondly, the snake was given the proper conditions and this injury came about. If the snake had been brought to a wildlife rehabilitation center, this situation would be seen in a different light. For one thing, at least at Wildcare, we would have been happy to take in the animal and heal it. Another, this person came HERE asking for help, and like other people in this forum, almost immediately, someone was trying to make her feel bad.

Being knowledgable about a subject when someone else is not gives you the responsibility to guide them in the correct direction. I would say, when encountering an injured wild animal, if you injured it or not, your duty is to do the best you can to keep it alive and healthy so it may be released back in to the wild. This person came here wanting help knowing how to do that. If you don't like their decision to help the snake in the first place, either don't say anything, or at least provide some good information about why AND tell them how it can be released in proper condition!!

Seriously. Hostility is absolutely useless in this world. Just do the best you can with other people. Don't intentionally be cruel and crass.

I guess if it was a suspected black racer caught in an unnatural place like a yard, you might agree with me. Not that there's easy and recent evidence to support my interpretation of your opinion... :grin01:

Is your yard made out of concrete with large cars and groups of people walking through it?

Do you have experience with injured wild animals and rehabilitating them? How about citizens and their interactions with injured wild animals?

Are you a moderator because you know a lot about snakes and provide members with help and guidance, or because you spend a lot of time on the computer? Because I'm pretty confused about what you're supposed to do and how you go about doing it, Roy.

Ouch! The sting! When did you join, uninformed newb? ;)
...And right about here is where I fall out of agreement with you. I may need to re-read the rules, because I wasn't aware you weren't allowed to talk to or comment on mods (or feeding methods, or politeness, or whatever it'll be tomorrow) without first having been on the forum since it's inception.

Ah, sigh. You've got me there. Point for you. You've sure got me beat in the "who has been here the longest" and the "who has the most posts" contests... which I guess automatically, according to your standards, makes you more in the know. Kudos.

Most be lonely up there on that high horse.

I'm a mod because I was elected to the position long before you arrived. My ability to help or guide never came into play, though I did enough of it before you graced us with your acumen and expertise.

It's ok, Rowan, I'll be your friend. Let the small proles rise up against the bourgeois! Strength in numbers! We're here, we're que- oh wait, wrong slogan.

Well at least you have that going for you.
And at least I know what I'm talking about and chose to help other people.
You are making this place, which is, may I mind you, just a stupid website... not fun for anyone. People who are new are now leaving because it's so hostile.

I think it's pretty rediculous that this argument is going on because you chose to be so rude. And now you are arguing with an eighteen year old over how to be polite, and the lesson seems to be lost on you.

When ignorance and aggressiveness are mixed, it kind of makes me mad, and it kind of makes me laugh my as* off.

Well that was all really unnecessary and unfortunate.

I agree with Jessica - the temperature must have been really high to warrant that reaction. In no way should sugar water cause pain. I hadn't realized how much time had passed either. It seems like it may just sluff off at this point. Do let us know what happens.

The tissue in the second round of pictures is really dark and looks like it is going necrotic to me. If you really want to help this guy, he needs to be taken to a knowledgeable veterinarian immediately.

Take it to the vet or let it go. The tissue is dying. At this point I would NOT try to push the prolapse back, as shoving dead tissue into the body will not benefit the snake.

I decided that a 3-day suspension was probably a little too harsh, so I lifted Salvadorian's suspension. I was about to do the same for the RowanRR account when it was brought to my attention that the suspended user had created a new accound while under suspension. That's a big no-no around here, so the 3-day suspension remains in effect for that user, and the new account (Rowan&Rosalie) has been permanently banned. If another account is created for this user during the suspension, I will perm-ban all associated accounts.

Interestingly, there are three accounts that share the same registration IP: the two "Rowan" accounts and "AshleyShadows." I'll have to look into that one when I have more time.

To All Who Think They Have a Concern,

Surprise, surprise...moderators are human beings, members of this forum, and actually allowed to have their very own personal opinions. If you happen to disagree with those opinions, address that as you would any other member, but keep the fact that that person is a moderator out of it. When you start spouting comments about a moderator hiding behind or abusing moderator abilities when they are not, all it does is violate the rule about antagonizing a moderator. Go far enough and you will discover the consequences. End of my moderating in this situation. Do not PM me again on this.

Below is my personal and professional opinion.

Was Roy perhaps a little harsh in some of his comments? That depends upon just how much you love snakes, even wild ones. I have been a certified veterinary technician for over 26 years and also worked for many years in a wildlife rehab, so I can safely say that I do have some experience in this particular situation. If the OP had any real concern about the snake's welfare, he would have simply relocated it when he found it. Since he didn't, a medical condition was either discovered or created by the following day. At that point, the OP had 3 options...take it to a vet, take it to a wildlife rehab or relocated it to the wild. Surprisingly, wild animals tend to fair much better on their own in situations like this versus when they have the "care" of people not qualified to give it the necessary treatment. And waiting 3 days to even ask for help shows a complete lack of compassion for the snake. 9 times out of 10, any wild animal that was ever brought in to the wildlife rehab should never have been brought in in the first place. I don't know how many "brancher" baby birds and "baby bunnies" have died because some caring person thought it would better survive taken from it's home and mother's care and cared for in their bathroom until it stopped eating the wrong diet and has such severe diarrhea that it was almost dead before we ever saw it.

At this stage, my personal and professional opinion is to take it to a vet and have it humanely euthanized. You've monkeyed around with it long enough that what chance it had to heal naturally in the wild is gone and all that is left is a slow and agonizing death. I'm sorry that you don't like my opinion, but sometimes, the truth hurts. I am thinking of the snake, not your sensitive feelings.

Yeah, that's probably because they live together. :uhoh:

Right!! people shouldnt be so sensitive! our snakes dont have feelings, they just want to be heathly and well cared for. thats our responsability.
life is harsh...the OP didnt really seem to get the point, so RoyMunson was pretty sure he knew what was going to happen and spoke his mind. there was nothing wrong with that...I have to say when i saw the first post and it DIDNT say 'we're going to the vet tomorow' i formed an opinion aswell about the survival chances of this animal.
good lesson for future forum users: like it or lump it. theres no rule that says you'll be 'molly-coddled' so dont get snotty and feel entitled. that 'offending post' may have been a little blunt...but there was no vet, they weren't letting it go. i've seen people on here get blasted for less.
now, to keep the suffering to a minimum, Susan has jumped in with some hard to swallow but very appropriate advice.
here's hoping three days gives the OP time to cool off and become receptive to the realities of their situation.

We're roommates. I'm not sure why one person on here would ever just have two accounts just because. And another user here, jlindp, also comes over to my house several times a week and sometimes uses my internet while on the boards. So she could potentially have the same IP address at times as well.

I know she created another account last night just because she wanted to keep reading and possibly post again. And of course she found out that you have to wait until someone activates the account, so nothing became of that.
