Please read this!

I work for a dog day care, just passed the link on for the dogs to my coworkers and signed for our legless friends.

Honestly if you don't know who or what the Humane society of the United States is, perhaps you shouldn't sign it...

If you think they're good, or you're neutral on them, be prepared to take a hard hit. They are the group pushing the proposals attacking us. They are lobbying, and they are being clever about what they are doing. All of the bills proposing to ban said animals in question puts their foot in the door. They will take more. If you fail to recognize that, I feel sorry...

Andrew, I think what lucillle was asking for you to say something in your own words and also provide us with some links and or some reading material to look into after you have made your passionate speech.

Personally, I do not think online petitions do any good. Its providing help and money to groups like USARK that will help us in the end. Signing up on a website is basically nothing, it can be forged and no proof that its accurate numbers of the people against.

IF you are truly passionate, I recommend talking to your congressman and senators. Call enough and speak politely and get to know the aids that answer the phones. Remember who they are when you talk to them. This will go a long way in getting your word across. Let your voice be heard politically instead anomalously.

Unfortunately, I believe you are correct. From what I have read, petitions are usually ignored, especially if they do not have all contact info for each signer, AND a real signature. Even then...

I just WISH there was a way to revoke the tax exempt status of any of these extremist, humaniac groups - I would be on it in a heartbeat! So I spend my energy campaigning against them to anyone who will listen. I hope to have some small effect on their donations. And if I can convince others to join me, maybe we can have a much bigger effect.

While this may be true about petitions in general, at the very least this type of petition, when forwarded etc... informs people who would otherwise be ignorant of specific issues with regard to these "humaniac" groups (eg. HSUS is anti-reptile uses monies mainly for self promotion, job security etc... and is similiar to PETA in many regards) I never knew about any of this until I stumbled into it after seeing Kathy and Bill's letter on cornutopia.com. almost two years ago.

.

And I appreciate all the links and info provided by many here, thank you.

Its so difficult in situations like this to get uninformed people informed. In my town, the second you say something against 'PETA' or other such group, your branded an 'animal hater' which couldnt be farther from the truth in my case. I dont like any extremist group, of any kind. extremes are not what the world needs.
I'm starting from the very bottom right now, but my dream one day is to have a shelter of my own, so i know there is one safe place i can provide for the unwanted, mistreated, and abandoned. I've just started a groomers course, and i volunteer at the local SPCA regularly...hopefully someday i can do a Vet tech. program.
This kind of thing makes me want to do it all the more, so that i can proove that PETA's way is not the only way. So i can show that common sence CAN be used in these situations.

Rosie, that is a tough situation. Try to arm yourself with quotes from PETA figureheads that reveal their true purpose. I like to pull the, "You realize that PETA is entirely opposed to pet ownership, right? Domestication of any kind?" And then I cite some of Newkirk's inane babbling about animal rights, and also the very real, very citable figure that PETA kills over 90% of the animals that entire it's Norfolk, Virginia shelter.

That usually hits them where it hurts.

Tis true. My town has the distinction of being 'Canada's first fair trade town' and i find that gives many people a bit of a "high and frosty" attitude. Think hippies with money and a sence of self satisfaction. I'm all for organics, fair trade, green things in general, sustainability and good treatment of animals. unfortunetly, this town is just a little high on its self. There are great people, but usually they're not loud enough. The people who are most often heard are from that group on my 'pet peeve' list, namely extremists. I never stop arguing, and the older i get the less intimidated i am and the better my point is made, but its taken (i kid you not) years of bravery. My father shares my views, he once had to physically defend a litter of fox pups in our back yard, because someone said they had mange. someone came out from animal control with a gun...they had no interest in finding out if the claim was true. Turns out the claiment owned chickens, and was concerned about her flock. she was prominent at town meetings and got herself heard.
Most of the people here want to write a check and feel good about themselves, not really look in to who their supporting.
