Prices?

Hey i was at my local pet store today and saw a little cali kingsnake for 85 bucks. Is that a good price?

It is probably more than a good breeder would charge you. Pet shop snakes are a crap shoot, they usually cost more than a breeder's snakes, the snake may or may not have mites, it may or may not eat for you......

You are much better off to buy from a breeder who is passionate about the species, plus if you go through a breeder you can see what the parents look like. Becky (a breeder on here) had some INCREDIBLE high white cali kings available....if you want a cali king you could get a really nice one from her..

Okay thanks, the only thing is i have never shipped before so i am kind of afraid it might die or something, would shipping cost a bunch anyway?

Shipping runs $40-60. Nearly all my snakes have been shipped. If the shipper is experienced, it shouldn't be a problem.

I have had alot of animals shipped, and am certified to ship out as well. Shipping usually costs around $50, but even with that it is STILL worth it to get a snake from a breeder.
Not only will you be assured of getting a properly sexed animal that will eat for you (and won't have mites) but you will be supporting someone who is dedicated to the animals they keep.

Yeah...In my experiance, the pet shops charge way too much. Pets unlimited had an amel cornsnake there the other day for $160.00
If you have local classified ad's...maybe check in there. In my area...theres many ads of people looking to re home snakes of many descriptions for many reasons. Of course buyer beware with snakes like that, always get a good look at them. But local smaller breeders sometimes advertise this way....its worth a look.
I guess the point is...theres lots and lots of places to go that are NOT the local petstore.

If you put a thread in the section about Other Animals and Related Items Wanted I bet you could find someone with a Cali King for sale! Becky produced some gorgeous high-whites. There was someone else, too...Walter? Doc Walker? Wade???

If you get a snake shipped, you have your choice of all the snakes in the whole United States!

Oh, well i had my reptile show this saterday and i talked to this guy and i am going to buy a nice female cali king from him for $35 next time he comes to Tulsa.

Not all pet stores get bad snakes or keep them poorly.

I have sold snakes to a few stores for many years. They charge a lot but have good quality animals.

I'm about to put some Calkings up for sale and while I charge less than most petstores I'm not the least expensive you can buy from. I am one of the best as far as quality goes though.

Sometimes you get a deal, sometimes you get what you pay for, be it inexpensive or not.

Do your research and buy what you like because you like it not because of how much it costs. If you're happy paying 150.00 for a Calking, as an example, then that snake was worth the money you spent.

I see so often people focusing on the price or not buying from a store and that's all well and good, if you like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Buy from whomever you wish, breeder, store, show, pay what you wish and be happy in spite of what some forum poster who knows a guy who paid less has to say.

Definitely, if you fall in love with a particular snake, providing it's healthy, just get it.
