Raccoons!!!!!!!!!!

I went outside this morning to feed my birds and found that raccoons killed a pair of my California Valley quail. They couldn't get them through the wire mesh on the floor(1/4"x1/4") so that just pulled their legs off.Poor little guys. They're neat little birds, the males sing at sun up every morning.I just set some box traps to catch the coons. If I get them,I'll take them to a farm up the road and release them. They'll be free to go....if I miss all six shots!!!!!!! :fullauto: :madeuce: :twoguns:

Thanks,I only have one pair of Valleys left.I'm trying to get a couple pairs of Mearn's quail off a friend of mine.Do a google search of both kinds, they are awesome looking little birds.I'll see if my daughter can take some pics and post them this weekend.

Even though I had a beloved pet racoon as a teenager, I hate them. A racoon killed my pet banties, and I baited a live trap with the guts. When the mama coon got trapped, she went for a swim in the trap in the horse tank, and my last words to her were I hope your babies starve. Words cannot describe how much I hate racoons.

I raised 5 babies at once when I was in high school. They were pretty cool little guys.I would put them in a kiddie pool with about 3" of water in it,dump in some scrambled eggs and dry dog food. they would pick it up and scrub it and dunk it for a few minutes before they ate it.I let them roam around the yard when they were a couple months old.I would come outside with a plate of food and call "coonies, connies, connies" and they would come running from all over the place!!! They are destructive though and once they find a food source(my quail!!) they'll keep coming back until there's nothing left or you get rid of them.

Sounds like you need some sort of double-barrier so that the raccoons can't reach the birds at all.

Yep,already working on it.I had 3 box traps set last night and caught a baby possum and 2 BIG raccoons.

I don't think I could ever hate an animal so badly.... this seems needlessly cruel to me. If you're pissed that they killed your chickens, fine, shoot them... but drowning isn't a pleasant way to go for anyone, or anything, regardless of their crime.... :shrugs:

From what I've read from you in the past, this truly shocked me. :(

Me too, I can't imagine you drowning a raccoon in any circumstances, Nanci

The other male died also,so I've only got 1 hen left.I didn't notice anything wrong with him yesterday.I put wire mesh all around the coop so the coons can't get under it now.I took care of the 2 coons, but I didn't have the heart to kill the possum(too cute!) so I just let him loose.I called my buddy and he has some valley and maybe some scaled quail for me.

I caught another HUGE coon last night,it barely fit in the trap! While searching for more quail,I found a guy pretty close to me that has Reeves pheasants.Guess I have to start working on another pen.Birds are like cornsnakes, you always need more.Just lucky I don't have a pond,my buddy raises just about any type of waterfowl you can think of.

Caught 2 more coons and the neighbors's cat last night.I'm picking up a few more valley pairs this weekend.

I agree with the drowning. Way to cruel for me. I cant believe anyone would do such a thing to an animal, no matter what they've done. There are places they you can relocate them in the wild. To be honest, it changes my views on a lot of people when they harm animals for no real reason.

I'm quite shocked by this whole thread. Drowning and shooting raccoons, trapping wild animals and domestic pets. Why are you having to do this? Because you put prime food out side in the garden. These animals are opportunistic,of course they'll come and try and get a free meal.

Got another waiting in the trap this morning.Relocating them only passes the problem on to someone else and helps to spread disease. We're over run with coons around here, because no one hunts them anymore, and guess what, rabid ones are showing up alot. A rabid coon attacked a 5 year old boy here and the woman with him killed it bare handed! I used to have bluetick coonhounds and hunted alot.We had crop damage permits and killed between 300-400 a year and that didn't even put a dent in them. Now there aren't many places left to hunt and the coon population is exploding.

I have this friend who didn't believe in killing predators, either. She just stood by and cried when a neighbor dog came over her fence and killed all her ducks, and then over another fence into her rabbit enclosure, and then ripped his way into the cages and killed all her bunnies and strewed them all over the yard. This happened over the course of three days. She went and discussed it with the dog owner after the dog killed the ducks. The dog owner promised to keep the dog home, but it returned two more times until my friend didn't have any animals left. That wouldn't have happened to me. I protect what is mine. I didn't have a gun back when I trapped the raccoon or I would have taken that route. You guys can all hate me if you want. I didn't lose any more of my precious pets, though, and neither did anyone else after getting a coon dumped off on them.

You tell em', Nanci. You don't have to explain your actions to anyone on this board.

I don't believe anyone has to explain themselves to anyone on this forum.
Protecting live stock is one thing, (ever heard of fences/cages.) but what was described here was an execution. and trapping peoples cats,
we have predators over here and hunt them down and kill them, but we don't start complaining that they've killed our pets, when we left the pets out to be eaten by gangs of raccoons, foxes.polecats, weasels, stoats, mink, buzzards rats etc etc.

a lot of that post is why most rescues won't adopt out to people who let cats out - they can kill and be killed by other animals. And I agree that no one has to explain themselves. I belong to a board called "stupid pet owners" where people post stories about the stupid things they see (the board is made up of pet store employees, volunteers, rescuers, vets, and hobbiest's) and has quite a bit drama.....

Always try your hardest to understand the opinion you don't agree with.

That has to be one of the best statements I've ever heard. You don't have to agree with someone else's opinion, but understanding it will help you tremendously.
