Cohabbing is cruelty...
This thread is just so I can let off a little steam, and the people here are excellent listeners and give great imput...so here goes.
Back in 1995 I bought my first snakes, a pair of San Felipe rosy boas named Felix and Grace. There was a pet shop right down the street from where I worked, called Petmania. I was getting their mice there. A few months after I got them, the shop closed down. Cathy who worked there gave me the name of their frozen supplier, and his phone number. This was in the fall of 1995.

Well, over the years I got alot more snakes. The supplier lives in the town I work in, so I would call him from the shop the day before feeding day and he would deliver at my work on the same day. Very convenient. 13 years and I never had a problem with the quality of the mice.

Fast forward to 3 weeks ago. On Friday the 10th, I thawed 3 mice for Lugosi, Voldermort and Festivus. Well, there is a huge thread in the "Health Issues/Feeding Problems" area of this forum about what happened to Festivus as a result of that feeding.

When it happened I asked my supplier about where that hardware cloth could have come from. He didn't know.....at the time. 2 weeks ago his helper who cleans the cages and changes food and water of the live rodents made the weekly delivery and said "once in awhile, some of the hoppers impale themselves on the hardware cloth. When she sees it she puts them out of their misery and throws them away". Come to find out, the helper was in the hospital the week I got the mouse with the hardware cloth in it. She's an elderly woman with health problems.
Anyway, on Friday my supplier dropped off the mice I needed this week, and I showed him the spikes the vet pulled out of Festivus. He said that it did indeed look like it was a part of one of his cages, and that while MOST of this frozen mice he sells are bought elsewhere, sometimes he puts down his own when he needs to.
He asked how Festivus was....but even though he admitted that it was one of HIS mice that hurt my boy...I'm still out $260 for vet bills. I don't know what to do next. He's been my supplier for 13 years and most pet shops and private keepers in this area use him. Before my herp club disbanded, you'd just mention his name and EVERYBODY knew him.....

I might want to change to Rodentpro, but I'm not sure I can fit all those mice in my freezer. How big are one of their boxes? As it is I now have a magnet in the bathroom so I can check every single mouse before feeding, so I KNOW it won't happen again....and I can't beat the convienience of weekly deliverys of just what I need when I need it....

As far as money goes....I have $80 a week of my own to spend. It has to go for food and supplies for the snakes, rats and skink, vet bills, and clothing or anything else I want. It sure doesn't go far! Right now I have $260 in vet bills that I need to pay...

Festivus looks AWFUL. He's blue right now, hasn't eaten, and the back of his neck is humped. I still don't know if he will make it. He lays with his head down and seems to hate to raise it. As of tomorrow morning he's off the antibiotics. All I can hope for is that he sheds and eats. Everything's at a standstill until then.

I am also concerned about a few projects that Festivus was the foundation of. If he dies, I feel like HE can't be replaced, but his genetic material can be. He's an 07 sulphur, but any male homo for caramel and bloodred would work...The females I was going to breed Festivus to are caramel het for amel and a hypo blood...So last week I emailed Rob at Bayou, where I got Festivus. Both snakes (Festivus and Babette) that I got from Rob exceeded expectations as far as beauty. Both were eating machines too. Not to mention, Rob and Louise were kind enough to let me pay for Festivus "on Layaway", sending them money whenever I had it. Well, Rob emailed me back, they are completely out of caramel bloods, and have no more 07 sulphurs either....he was going to email me and tell me what he DOES have, but I haven't heard back from him yet.

So...I check out Serpenco....and see the amber bloods. Just the ticket! Except that as of right now Rich has only 5 males. Well, I COULD use a female too....but won't have money for a LONG time (because of the vet bills and the Holidays). And by the time I HAVE money, I'm sure that 1) Rich's free freight sale will be over. 2) Rich's 50% off sale on purchases over $1000 will be over or 3) Rich will be out of amber bloodreds....
Not to mention that NOW I am obsessed with getting an amber blood (or maybe a FEMALE sulpher from Rob) even if Festivus heals and eats....but I told Rick in August that Hydi and Carmen from Dean were "it"...except for keepers. So, how to I go about sneaking another snake in the house?

Not a good time to be me, right now......gggrrrr

i am sorry about Festivus and hope he gets better soon, could you bring up the topic of the vets bill to your supplier?

oh, well that was kind of him..................

i really don't know what else to say

Hard decision Beth. I feel like he should have taken more of the responsibility. Especially after he decided the metal did look like it came from one of his cages. That was wrong on his part.

On the other hand, mistakes do happen. I would like to think this guy will take steps to see that it never happens again. Don’t stop using him if it is going to hurt you more than it does him.

So, how to I go about sneaking another snake in the house?
Um, you do realize you're officially an addict right?!?! :crazy01: After aaaalllll of that rant (which I can sympathize with by the way) your question was "How do I sneak in a new snake?"!!! :roflmao: Made me laugh (and I can't give you any new rep for it yet either).

PS. I roughly spend $300-$380 on mice from RodentPro which gives me a plump full box of over 1000 mice of various sizes from pinky to full grown. Typically there's about 250-300 adult mice and 200-400 hoppers in that mix.

Hey Brent :)
I figured it all out. If I ordered through Rodentpro, my costs would be about the same or slightly cheaper. My problem would be where to store 2-3 months supply of mice. Especially since only 9 of my 32 snakes aren't brumating this year so ordering a huge bag for them right now just seems like overkill.

And Wade, I'm weighing all my options. Right now it might hurt me more than him to go elsewhere. But writing out the rant makes me feel a tad better. Thanx :)

When I started ordering mice in bulk, I went ahead and bought a chest freezer from Sears, since my fridge is a cheapy with very small freezer space.
I got this one, and the price was less than my average mouse order.. Not too bad for a one time purchase..

Also when I was ordering from RP, I was using a vacuum sealer too, since I don't really go through them as fast as some do. It keeps them pretty good for a long time!

You're still an addict . . . ;)

I did the same. I'm not sure what size it is, but it's small and just big enough for my mice orders along with some leftover room for other items that overflow the fridge. My wife isn't squeamish by any means, but she was all for getting a separate small freezer for my mice. :) I used to go through repackaging them, but when I get about 3 orders a year, they don't sit in the freezer too long before they're used. I don't worry too much about freezer burn except for the pinkies which I tend to ziploc in my own bags after I get them.

Poor Festy! If he knew how you were talking about him! Beth, you've gotta have faith! He's BLUE! I have snakes that I take out and do CPR on when they are blue because they look so (dead) horrible!

I kind of vote for getting a little chest freezer, maybe changing suppliers. You can always store other things in it, too.

I wonder how the guy would respond if you were more straight with him. Told him you expected him to pay the vet bills. If this had happened to a human, you'd own that company now.

So right Nanci.
I wonder if we could give him the benefit of the doubt though.. Could be he's iffy cause he's waiting to see if he's paying your vet bills or buying you a new one. That's the way I'd look at it if I were him.. He should pay the greater IMO if Festy doesn't make it. I agree though that being direct is the best course of action. You've been a very good customer too, it would probably cost him less than losing your business over time.

Sorry to introduce the possibility that he might not make it.. I do believe he will!!

Thanks for everything, I'm sitting here (at work) taking this allll in.
I get the impression he's waiting to see what happens with Festy, too.
I could be wrong, but he's always SEEMED a decent guy.....

As far as the small freezer, I've thought of it.
I may do it.
But my non snake loving husband is also starting to get annoyingly "green".
He has bought solar panels and unplugged everything we don't use everyday to save electricity. I'm sure he'd balk at another "plug in".....

I'm hoping my NEXT husband is a snake guy :)

That is one of the weirdest things I have ever heard!

I missed the other thread - just went over and read the first page or two. In all my years of reptile keeping, I never heard of anything like this before! I am so sorry that it happened to you and your snake. Sure hope he comes out of it ok!

If the worst happens, I think I have an extra male '08 amel het caramel and blood that you could have. I will have to check to be sure. Not as good as your male, but better than nothing. If it turns out you need him, and I do have an extra, I will just give him to you if you pay shipping, or meet up with me at a show.

I feel so terrible for you and your "baby" - hope he makes it and is as good as new!

You may want to get that checked out. Things generally only go green when they turn bad . . . in my experience anyway! :D

LOL!!

I really hope Festivus is OK and I'm sorry things are bad right now... I hope your supplier will help you out with the costs and that things work out for the best.

I also wanted to say, Kathy, you are such an amazing, generous person!!!

Kathy, I don't know what to say! You are the MOST amazing generous person, THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I hope I don't need your male though....

And I'm glad that it's such a rare occurance that YOU had not heard of it before. I have only been keeping snakes 13 years, but now I'm super paranoid and run the magnet over everything now.

Since he was doing so well for so long (not just a new, stressed out, acquisition), I think he will probably be ok, as long as no serious infection sets in. I sure hope he makes it! This is the kind of situation that I would use grapefruit seed extract to clean anything that you don't want to use bleach on, and to keep things as sterile as possible until he heals up.

Are you sure the hardware cloth (or whatever it was) attracts magnets? Test it out, if you didn't already do so. It may not be detectable with magnets - I don't know. Maybe you can just squish a little with your fingers on the f/t mice to see if you can feel anything that shouldn't be there, especially on small or medium mice.

Considering that I have fed off tens of thousands of mice (live and frozen) over the years, and I have known other keepers, who together, fed off even more, and I never heard of it happening, it has to be REALLY rare. Especially if you are sure not to get mice from that particular breeder unless he changes his system. I am sure we all would have seen this on various forums if it happened with even occasional regularity.

Good luck!
