Rep point display

Would it be possibe to have the display of members' rep points back? I really liked seeing people's rep points whizz up when I repped them. More usefully, when I was new here I used it as a way to gauge how members I didn't 'know' were regarded on the site, especially when I was asking for advice, along with how long they'd been members it gave me more of a feel for the relative status of members. Even if there's a maximum limit, after which you just get a 'maximum points' status, it would be nice to have the points displayed again, if possible. Thanks, J9

Rich, I have had many people mention this in the last week or two. I really found it useful as well. As I mentioned before if the size of the numbers are a problem I think a lot of use would be OK with the idea of reseting it to zero and we can start over.

I have to agree with Janine & Wade. When I first arrived it was very useful to know that Nanci had a ton of rep points. That, along with the content of her posts, let me know this was someone whose opinion might be informative & informed. If the rep points are a bandwidth or machine time hog, and they would be less so if reset, then I would be totally fine with resetting. Maybe if that would help, they could be dumped & set to zero on January 1st every year? Just MHO, but I wanted to chime in.

Rich, can you not set the rep points to increase by only 1 point per rep? I never understood how it was calculated in the first place. Just that it eventually ballooned! That would solve the issue of mahoosive numbers and bandwidth. I love my points and wee comments etc, and I would like to keep them all. But I would not mind starting the counter at zero and increasing my points 1 by 1 all over again (after years of accumulation ). I would either like the rep system to be fully instated, or not at all. We are in rep limbo at the moment!

Yep.... it was 1 by 1 when it first started the increased by 1% 0f the givers rep...... Thats when it went wrong....

Could the current rep all be reduced by a factor of 10 or 100 or something and then have only 1/10 or 1/100 of the current amount of rep that is added on each time, added on each time. Or would that require far too much programming?

I agree that Nanci usually has informative good stuff to say. But I think that content is important, that sometimes David's posts can be as good as Goliath's.

Whether or not the points show, many of those with lots of rep points are wise and have worthwhile stuff to say. If you took all the points away I would venture to say that in six months or so the same point pattern would emerge. And I look for posts from certain people because of their wisdom.

But anyone part of this community for even a short time can make up their own mind about who they prefer to read and listen to, without being cued by points. Quality shows. You don't have to wrap a diamond in glitzy paper, it shines just as beautifully wrapped in burlap.

Thank you for doing away with the rep points system. Points have been given out for content which has nothing to do with cornsnakes, which I believe, is the purpose of this site. I know I am guilty of repping non-cornsnake posts, and have received much of the same. Thank you for making the "playing field level", something many people often ask for, but then, when they feel affected by such a move personally... I too look for posts from certain people because of their wisdom. For a new site member it takes a lot of time to figure out who those wise people are. Thanks again. dave

Mike, strangely I, myself, have never been one with much of an aptitude for stating or restating the absurdly obvious.
But in this case, you have outdone yourself, and I will make an exception. Since you have exerted yourself with the birth of such a profound observation and laid the first stone, I will heartily agree with you and, in the spirit of brotherhood and community, lay another stone beside it.

From the day I joined the forum, I have always looked at 1) date joined forum, 2) age, and 3) sifted through knowledge and wisdom of content of postings---to apply my own mental notations of who knew their schtuff.
I am painfully embarrassed and ashamed at having further betrayed my personal integrity by again 'stating the obvious' in the former sentence.

Rep points were fun.
Elle, they were applied as (and displayed as) 1/100th of what one had to give. So the growth in numbers was non-linear.
With rep points, as in life, my own private personal mental "rep point system" sometimes corresponds to scales of measurement IRL, and sometimes not. Most often not.
I would be mortified if suddenly my mind could be read....and the number system in my head became suddenly visible above, or beneath, avatars on a forum.

I used to have a wonderfully astute/acute/witty quote about 'stating the obvious'. I wish I could find it. I don't remember even exactly how it went. Something about some people having a penchant for stating the obvious in a manner that made it sound original and profound to the dull-witted. Or something like that. Personally, I do like the display of rep and of age. I like the idea of just making the display show a consistently lower percentage, if that will help the programming end of it. It will still be relevant, if all are at the same percentage. I also like to see the numbers go up when I give rep. Very silly - but true!

That is my preference. However, if it is not possible, no big deal.

What exactly is it concerning my reply in the other thread about this issue that you do not understand? I hope you understand the concept of "server load" in relation to the processors having to display calculated values for each member's profile shown in every displayed thread.....
