Rep Points

No I think it should be made into a drinking game, one beer for every post about rep. Double for whining about whining, and so on. Then we can have a pissing match by volume.

I'm tellin' y'all I have the magic formula for those starving for forum rep, attention, and super-stardom.
Cumulative Individual CS.com Forum Status = x(number of years keeping corns + number of years in total animal Husbandry) + µ(chronological Years of age) + z(formal Education in biology, animal sciences, and/or animal husbandry) + ß(total clock hours Reading and Researching reptiles).

That equation is as follows : CIFS = xH + µY + zE + ßR.

Although I expect even this scientific equation will not satisfy.
The ones crying out the most about "rep" want some mysterious ethereal prestige for.....foot stomping?...tattling to teacher?...most noise?...biggest tantrums?...most snide remarks?...or I don't know what.
None of which I know how to measure,...and none of which deserves praise or commendation. Nor even accommodation...which was given.

Giving in to crying children is reinforcing negative behaviour. Which perpetuates it. And makes the parent look weak and foolish.

doesn't matter who said it said:
I'm sure Rich has nothing better to do than deal with the one or two people at his party that are unhappy with the menu.

Does anyone REALLY believe Rich did anything THAT fast and "drastic" without any drama from his end unless he pretty much wanted it done already? Does a stricter limit to reps make this ANY less of a good site. If so, HOW? Explain it to me because I really don't get it.

In my opinion, this site seems to be attractive to different people for one of two reasons: the ability to exchange information quickly with a lot of people who share our interests or because of all the bells and whistles that make the seem more like a kid's playroom than a reptile forum (to my eyes). It seems some people value one aspect more than the other, and I'll admit that I would enjoy the site more if there were no bells and whistles. That's just me, though. I certainly use PMs, reps, etc. - but I wouldn't miss them if they were gone, either.

I can understand the SPAMMING across multiple threads that started this bothering people, but I can't see how ANYONE can care about reps one way or the other enough to start insulting people and using masked profanity. Really - I can't!

I can't see it as being that finite in options. There are a LOT more points to fill in between these two on a continuum, and I'm sure that any particular person's "reasons" change not only as their experience grows, but even from visit to visit, depending on their immediate desires.

For example, I might be here today, researching different incubation techniques and strategies, stop by tomorrow morning when someone in the original thread suggests an alternative to moss as a medium, spend tomorrow afternoon looking at the photo gallery, and after dinner, goof around with my friends over at DYK/chat/wherever.

Any one of these scenarios may present an opportunity to dole out "reputation".

Over the weekend, I may use some other aspect of the site, for vastly different reasons. It's not the "either/or" situations you've described.

Exactly. Dale, you are hereby bestowed with more positive-ly obnoxious giant red letters in italics !

I'll admit that I was writing in terms of extremes where reality is actually somewhere between those two extremes. I'm just not sure I agree that there are many people in the middle. i'll also admit that I am pretty darn close to one of the extremes, and i'll also admit that some regular users' behavior has me convinced they are pretty darn close to one of the extremes, too.

Still, I agree with your assessment that the black and white differentiation in my previous rhetoric is a simplification, and I should have written that more clearly. I stand corrected.

Have you all seen this on the forum main page?

Most users ever online was 112, 04-13-2009 at 06:17 PM

Which translates that all conditions, features, variables, other site-attractions, members, and the stars in the heavens....were all on point for the second time in a row this month for maximum hits, enjoyment, and usage!

Which translates as : if it ain't f@#$ing broke, don't f@#$ing fix it.

Or am I the only one who can see that the "emperor has no clothes on"...???

The rep point system needs an overhaul anyway. I believe I mentioned that in another thread somewhere. Something to the effect that the numbers relating to power and rep value have gotten so big that they are possibly going to cause an issue with the site itself.

What I intend to do is the cut back those values drastically sometime in the near future, just in case they might cause a problem. I thought my changing the algorithm whereby rep power is calculated would do that, but apparently not. I've got a message off to my vBulletin programmer about this to see what he suggests. Normally when I do that, he goes ahead and does what I asked him about, so bear that in mind.

I've been intending to do this sometime in the future anyway, but now that it has been brought up.....

But, Rich, now they can't keep blaming one person and use this as an excuse to use profanity about him. Shame on you for taking that from them.......lol.

Seriously, good luck!
