Rosie is growing!

Rosie has been ill this week, seeming listless on Tuesday during the day, making me think she'd worn herself out on Monday's long walk, until that evening she suddenly had blood-streaked diaorrhea, followed by pure blood. So straight to the vets, where her temperature was normal so he's not sure if she's picked up a bug or eaten some rat poison. She had injections of antibiotics and vitamin k and he was happy for her to come home unless she took a turn for the worse. Back yesterday for another injection and due again today. She's back to her bouncy usual self and yet again is loving the chance to see her vet and be fussed by him despite the injections. Today she's passed stools with a very smalll amount of blood. As I'm working nights my eldest boy is taking her to the vet's today.

Hmmm- I hope she's okay. That's very mysterious.
The worst thing is not being able to go to the vet's because of working nights, although Harry's being very responsible about taking her and reporting back and forth. As far as I know there are only properly set up bait stations around the visitor centre where we go, and we didn't go near there on Monday and I certainly didn't see Rosie chewing on any dead rats. In fact apart from the irrresistable rabbit poop she isn't a scavanger and ignores food scraps etc when we're out. I've written a note for Harry to take asking for a working diagnosis and bloods to be drawn today if we haven't got any answers.

I hope all is well Janine. Get better quick Rosie!

After 2 more visits for Vitamin K and antibiotic injections, I'm glad to say I've got a bouncy, happy Rosie again. The vet feels the most likely cause for the problem was either rat poison or a contaminated rat carcase at the riverside. So this presents a problem, as that's about the best easily reached open area to take Rosie for a decent run around. I'll ring the reserve wardens on Monday to report what happened and ask if they've had any other problems.

Did they diagnose bleeding from rat poison for sure, or is that just a theory? Couldn't the bug have coincidentally just run its course?

Dang Janine. I'm really sorry to hear that happened to Rosie. I'm certainly happy to hear she pulled through whatever it was she had and hopefully she won't have any more episodes like that again.

I am glad Rosie is doing better. I'm sorry that you guys went through that.

Thats a good point Nancy, when vet's treat for something and the animal gets better, it's easy for them to think that the treatment caused the animal to get better. An immune system has an amazing ability to fight off bugs on it's own and it can make it look like a treatment worked when the animal would have made a full recovery on its own.

Just a theory! Which I'm not impressed with to be honest. I specifically sent a note with Harry yesterday saying I'd like a working diagnosis and giving permission for bloodwork. So the vet feels poison is most likely but it could also be due to worms (except she hasn't passed any at all), it could be a gastric bug (I'm to take a stool sample if she produces any more odd poop) or because she eats raw meaty bones (which she's eaten since the day I brought her home)
The wardens at the Riverside reserve keep logs of any problems as all the regular walkers, birdwatchers and the yachting club keep them informed of anything untoward as well as first sightings of migratory birds etc they will know if any other dogs have become ill recently.

Rosie is a beautiful animal. I have enjoyed viewing your pictures of her. I am glad to find out she is doing better. I know we all love our pets...but my furry friends have always held a very special place in my heart. I hope you are able to find out the cause of this problem, for sure, at some point in time. I also hope that Rosie continues to do well and enjoy her runs outside.

Rosie's completely back to her normal happy self. I just took her for short walks for a while but she showed she was ready for more exercise again by going completely stir crazy and tormenting the cats. So, to start with, gradually longer runs building up to lure chasing, because our show and racing day is coming up at the end of this month

Today was the first time back to the river, on a cold and blustery day, there weren't many other people around at all, which meant lots of rabbits were out feeding. So when we unexpectedly walked into a group of 7 or so feeding, Rosie ran straight through them to successfully catch and kill........a plastic bottle!

Somewhere in the dim recesses of Rosie's mind, a very small lightbulb must have lit up, because as I wandered through enjoying seeing the wild plums in blossom, she suddenly went into hunting mode, and gave a good attempt at catching another 2 rabbits she flushed. After that I think she had about 4 more chases, so now I've got a very happy and tired dog asleep on the sofa

I'm hopefully taking Rosie for her first show and race of the year on Sunday, so we've been out practising with her lure and out today for a lovely walk to the riverside to chase rabbits. There were lots of other dog walkers about today so only 2 rabits chased and lots of racing around being happy.

It cracks me up how high she gets with all of her feet off the gound. That last picture looks like she was doing her impression of superman. LOL

I'm amazed I got the shot without putting the camera in sports mode, Rosie was at her top speed playing with the poor labrador that just couldn't keep up!

All she needs is the cape. :)
I can't wait for the show and racing on Sunday! Rosie only seems to have two working brain cells so I'm fairly sure she'll just mess around instead of chasing the lure with purpose again this year, unless I can bribe someone to tie a plastic bottle on the line!
