How important is it to make sure your pair are unrelated? How is inbreeding or even line breeding tolerated with the overall health to the future babies. When I used to raise rabbits a lifetime ago it seems. I did practice both because I was dealing with a color breed (Harlequins). I know that good & bad faults where capable in showing up so I was always careful. But in snakes what am I looking for in faults. Is size, fussy eaters, bad tempers etc. Passed on. Whant to make sure I know what I should be looking for & what not to do.
Hoping I get a lot of answers on this one.

Sometimes with inbreeding and line breeding, spinal kinks and other deformities can develop that compromise the overall health. Size is usually passed on, as well. I'm not sure if temperament is passed on genetically. From my creamsicle clutch last year, both parents were absolute sweethearts, but one of the babies is just out for my blood constantly. Temperament seems more like a luck of the draw kind of deal. Kinks are one thing that I would definitely watch out for, though. If you have a clutch where kinked snakes are produced, you'll want to pair up the parents differently the next time. If kinks are produced from the same female or male, you might just have to retire that snake as a breeder.
 
I don't think there have been any studies about handing on traits, but a breeder local to me only breeds from Corns that were problem-free feeders as hatchlings. His view is that he rarely produces any non-feeding hatchlings, because of this strategy. He's been breeding Corns for around twenty-five years, so he's watched a few generations.

It is just an observation though and doesn't have any scientific basis.

I'm pretty sure that size is inheritable. I certainly had one strapping male that consistently fathered hatchlings that were noticably larger than other males' offspring.

No, I didn't buy anything new- I meant Bacon Snake from last fall, he's het opal stripe, and Calli, who's lav stripe het amel. I saw Bacon at VMS- he's a proven breeder being replaced, and it set wheels turning. THEN because I was buying the lav stripe, (from Joe Pierce) I got empty box syndrome and had to add in the Rich Hume avalanche stripe and bloodred stripe het snow. ALL because I window shopped at VMS, for which I blame Kim ZoologyMajor.

It's definitely dangerous window shopping at VMS! That's how I got my Coral (Hypo) Snow and my Charcoal (both proven breeder males). But their table at the Rocky Mountain Reptile Expo is usually one of the best tables. They've just got all kinds of stuff, and Sean is a great guy, too. He'll answer any questions you have.

Thanx everyone for your answers. I jumped into corns in a weird way. I did my research and handled my friends corns then looked for a good breeder & bought 20 of my 23 corns from her.
Yup I didn't start with just one or two. I couldn't make up my mind on the colors so just kept adding on. Know I have to try and pair everyone and see if they work. I know I will have to buy more from a different breeder to match some of the ones I already have. I still need an easy read book on corns for dummies. lol
But thanx again & I am sure to have more questions again sometime.
