She ate!!

My little female blood that I picked up as a nonfeeder (from Marsha's Wild Cherry) has been the ultimate refuser. She ignored ever single pinky, pinky part, scented lizard pink, lizard part that I've offered. I'd kept her going with the occasional mouse tail, then she figured out how to spit those out as well.

I was just about to give up on her then I noticed the zebra finches had hatched another couple of eggs, so I decided to give it a shot, and she ate! :D

So there's another one for the list if anyone has run out of options. Live baby zebra finch is about the size of a small pink too. :licklips:

Yeah, those are REALLY easy to find in the local pet stores! ;)

Glad you found something she likes, Tom. Have you also tried the KFC scented pink that was recently suggested? Yummmmm! :)

At least finches are prolific breeders. I don't know if I could do it. MAYBE for a baby Wild Cherry...

Yeah, I didn't buy the finches for that purpose, and I was a little hesitant, but it was a baby that had taken a big fall (4 foot flight cage). I put it back in the nest but then thought to myself, 'What are the chances he's going to make it?' I still don't know the answer to that question but the question made me feel like less of a monster, lol.

And yes you're quite right Nanci, very prolific indeed! I have about size of the flock I want now (5 birds) and after these are raised, I'm taking out their nest. Maybe it will return next time I have picky snake babies? And heck, maybe the eggs would work too?

CONGRATS!!!

Now that it ate SOMETHING, you can probably use some dirty nest material to scent pinks. If it doesn't work the first time you try, it probably will work after another couple of live bird meals.

BTW, I have sometimes gotten non-feeders to eat strips of chicken heart or gizzards. If they do that a couple of times, you can often get them to take pinks scented with the same food they ate.

Thanks Kathy, that's a great idea! I don't have another baby bird in that size, since this was the last to hatch, and they dropped most of their eggs this breeding and broke them. The first one only hatched a day or two before the other and it's already the size of a fuzzy. But I will try scenting the pinks with some dirty bird nesting material.

I was thinking you could pop a pink, live or not! in with a nest of baby birds, to get it nice and smelly!

Bump-

Nothing has worked so far- with bird scenting that is.. I resorted to mouse tail for a bit, but now that I have baby finches again, I offered her one and she took it with much enthusiasm. I guess I'm going to have to freeze this bunch of baby finches (5) or they'll be too big for her to eat in a couple days.
I GUESS I could do this forever (with some planning and freezing at appropriate sizes) but I'm hoping she'll eventually get to liking the idea of eating in general, and then even a pinky mouse won't seem like such a bad idea.. Maybe the transition from live bird to f/t bird will make it easier to go to f/t pinky..
Hopefully these are the last few birds I have to sacrifice though. It is infinitely harder to pluck one out of the nest, then it is to pull a mouse out of the freezer.

Ok, so it's been a weekly f/t baby finch for her since my last post. But, today she took a f/t baby finch AND followed it up with a finch scented f/t pinky!!

I think we're getting there, and she's definitely worth the trouble.

Congrats on getting her feeding on f/t pinks. I'm sure you've finally turned the corner and will be able to (fingers crossed) get her to eat just pinks from now on.
Keep us updated on her progress.

We call her Jubilee, since she comes from Wild Cherry= Also I'm an X-man fan.
I'm so happy to cross this point with her, I'm now pretty sure I can get her on the next pinky.

EXCITED!

You know I'm sensitive to the fact that people might think I'm giving Marsha bad press. I'm certainly not. She let me know up front that this girl was a brat and gave me a great guarantee (and a great deal). If I didn't get her going she was willing to give me what I'd paid toward one that was feeding. After all the effort though, I'm SO satisfied to see this, I don't think any could replace our little Jubilee.

I have a reformed brat at my house, too. They are lucky people are willing to take the time to get them on the right track!

It's great to hear you're making progress with the little one, and I love the name Jubilee. Do you have any pictures of her?

I do! Here's one of her looking at but refusing a pinky. It's an old one, but she hasn't grown much since. Hopefully that changes now.
