snakes and legos

I have seen a lot of people use lego hides and am thinking of doing the same. What is the best way to clean the legos (sterilize them) before putting them in the tank?

You will get various answers from boiling (above) to a bleach solution.

I wouldn't even worry about it if I was putting them in my tank, but that's just me. I don't go overboard with sterilizing unless I am bringing something in from outside like rocks or wood.

These were played with a lot by my sister and I when we were kids, such as putting them in our mouths, so sterilizing might not be a bad idea lol

Yeah, just boil them for a little bit, I would use a strainer or steamer to keep them off the bottom so they don't melt, and let them dry out really well before assembling, so you don't trap any water inside them...

Yeah... I wanted to do lego hides for my snakes, but trapped water was a big issue. So I decided against legos. Stinking things take forever to dry. LOL.

Try a blow dryer... or flame thrower :flames:

LOL. I haven't tried a blow dryer, but I figured in our 100+ degree heat and 2% humidity here in Mesa, AZ, they'd dry out pretty good.

I was WRONG. Even separated out real good on a dry towel in the sun for 2 days, I still felt water on some of them when I put them back together. LOL.

Fill them with sand....

I miss my Lego's, between me and my little sister and brother, we had thousands! Enough to fill up a whole toy box. Some kid got real lucky when our parents gave them away after stepping on them, "For the last time!" :roflmao:

Your parents sound just like me right about now! The kids have a huge BUCKET full of those teensy tiny legos and just LOVE to leave them on the floor in the dark so I can impale my feet every night. I may now have a use for them other than flinging them at the kids whenever I step on one!

I have always pondered this idea for my hatchlings? Let me know how it goes as far as if the snake appriciated it.

I have used them for over three years now to build hides. It was a fun way to make my son feel included in the process of preparing a habitat for his new pet and I had fun too. I guess I am still a kid at heart. LOL!

I suppose you could always use a mesh bag and dry them in the dryer??? Or in a mesh bag and use the dish washer??? Just a few ideas on drying them. I cant wait to some of these hides!

Im in an apartment with a shared laundry mat, so the dryer might not work, but the dishwasher is an interesting idea...
