Snakes in public!

I saw a guy driving a jeep today with a ball python wrapped around his arm.It was in the 70's today which ain't too bad,but it is a jeep with no doors or roof.I am thinking the breeze would be too much for it.

Wow I am very glad this topic has done well. There is much thinking to be involved and it keeps me wondering about the human species lol.

I love my snakes so very much as well, that I wish I could talk them everywhere with me, but thats not likely to happen. I do take them to reptile stores and I even do shows at schools when the conditions are right for the animals. The jeep thing though...What if the snake decided to take a cruise out of the vehicle?

On another note...that man had a boid in canada...and we have had a coldspell during that time. It reminded me of the first snake I ever really considered purchasing. He caught my eye and I didn't want to choose anything else. An Okeetee about five feet long and nice thick boarders. He was huge so I was not allowed to buy him. I later saw the same snake in the jacket arm sleeve on a transit bus. It was october, cold and the guy had him with him because he had his landlord looking over the place. Apparently the landlord didn't know there was a pet snake in the house. He gave me all of this information rather calmly. I didn't feel so calm. (I knew it was the same snake because it was the only other corn ((Besides the upper keys I got instead)) that was at World of Pets.)

Anyways thanks everyone for the feedback! I have enjoyed reading your views!

I know Im a little late getting in on this but I have to say I agree with you 100%. Its cool for us and those who respect the animals to show them to one another, that is of course the correct time and place, however these people who go flaunting their animals around simply to get a rise out of people is absurd. Who's to say the snake didn't get stressed out and bite some little kid walking around, then all snakes would be banned in your province. People just don't think and it drives me crazy. It also puts a horrible name on us who care for our animals properly, respect them enough to not cause unwanted stress, and have enough respect for other people not to purposefully scare them with animals that some of us are desperately trying to get to be accepted by mainstream society. Very good post and a very relevant topic.

Large dogs need the exercise of being walked. Large pythons and boas are better of getting their exercise indoors where their temperature needs can also be met.

^^^ I agree with this. I would love to be able to take my snake outside in my backyard occasionally but Im a little concerned. I live in Phoenix and right now, even in the shade, its around 115 F. Not to mention its really dry. Sorry, off-topic there

a friend of mine took in a boa constrictor from Saskatoon. I had no idea they were illegal there until I asked him why they bothered sending him so far away to find a new home.

I deal with snakes at the educational events, but I really don't like bringing my own out, but because I get to nervous. The snakes seem to handle it fine.

I did bring my snake to my comic book store once, but only because I was talking about him and the guys wanted to see him (you tend to get to know your comic book sellers, I have a pull list there and love chatting about books with other like-minded geeks. Also doesn't hurt that I'm a girl). So, since I checked with the staff before I brought him, it's only a few blocks from my house (I'm lucky!), and the weather was fine and no one else had to see him as he was safe in a pillow case in a bag - I don't see anything wrong with it. I would also never take my spaz-snake out, only the mellow ones would ever be considered for such an outing.

I'm a pretty big geek. My boyfriend and I do costuming and I often think how 'cool' it would be to incorporate my snake into one of my costumes for a convention or event. But that's just it: It would be cool, not at all practical or safe. And it's something I would never do.

As someone said. In a perfect world... but our world is not perfect. :nope:

Something I would like to do someday is maybe exibit my snakes at a Reptile Show or perhaps for educational purposes. But once again, that's in the proper time and place.

About the boob thing... that was hilarious!

My husband and I will take the snakes out in the front yard, or to the reptile store (less than a mile away), or sometimes to the regular pet store. We've taken our 7.5' boa into Petco where we do cat adoptions. But whoever is handling the snake is always very respectful of other people liking or disliking it.

We never go out on hot or cold days. We don't take the snakes if we're taking a dog. And to cat adoptions, the snake travels in a secure container and is only removed after the cats have been set up and my partner walks away from the cat area.

Taking the boa into petco/petsmart always helps people realize that the cute little baby boa they want to buy will get this large, and often- they reconsider. It also gives little kids the chance to touch the snake and realize that they're not gross or slimy.

On the other hand, my sister in law quite enjoys the shock factor she gives people when taking her corn snakes or pet rats out in public. And she'll take them anywhere. Even in the grocery store.

They don't allow pet snakes to be brought into my local petco, only dogs (maybe cats but I've never seen a cat). The reason they cite is because they don't want customers to panic.

i cant stand people that parade around with there pythons and boas.i go to music fest every year cause i live so close and i can see close to 50 people walking around with there 6 foot boa around there neck.
i dont think people like that deserve to own a snake or any animal

What I would like to know, is why you are using the logo of my business as your avatar?

I was at a party once hanging out upstairs with a few friends. The host let me take out his beautiful and HUGE ball python. I had him around my shoulders and he was just chillen.

The hosts girlfriend was erm occupying the upstairs bathroom for quite awhile, so I went downstairs. The Ball was still around my shoulders, I'd practically forgotten about him because he was being so still and calm. That was until I was greeted by the screams of every single girl at the party...

I thought it was kind of hilarious except that a few of them called me gross and disgusting. I don't care though, in fact I wish I'd had a camera with me. When I caught sight of myself in the bathroom mirror with the Ball around my shoulders I couldn't stop staring at myself! It looked pretty cool. ;D
