SO MUCH going on here! How am I to catch up!?!

I've been out~ the move~ the new property~ the bad internet connection~ the ENDLESS HOURS of work!~ the new obsession with birds (I had no idea I liked poultry so much before I got some!)..........and I was just thinking~ Corn Snakes......I've got two clutches down so far~ more on the way.....and someone just asked me the other day about a variety of corn snake I've never heard of..............OBVIOULSY I've not been paying attention! How am I ever to catch up! So I signed in~ but there is SO MUCH going on here! How am I to keep it all straight?!?!? I have too much to think about (someone want to explain the recessive links of blindness in the heritage Blue Slate Turkey?? I'm a bit confused but I think one of my turkeys is blind.......or incrediably stupid.....one or the other!)

Tell ya what~ if you could just get me a decent internet connection and 6 more hours every day..............

!!!!!!!!!

OH MY!

Hello again all!
How are you doing?
And what did I miss in the last year I've been out of touch?
................. (just condence it down like soup and make it idiot proof......really TIRED OVER WORKED idiot proof please!)

Well there's a new subforum just below this one on the main index page, called "week in review", that might help to start you off :)

Sorry I can't help with the internet connection and extra hours in the day, but welcome back!

Best wishes,

Okay~ it's late~ I'll try the "week in review" column if I can squeeze a couple hours in this weekend. You SURE you can't get me just a couple more hours a week? It would help. I felt pretty uninformed when the guy asked me about "patternless" and I was reduced to asking if he meant "vanishing stripe"??? I must have missed a lot~ even just two more hours a day might help (though~ if they are daylight hours I'll have to use them for fencing~ and if they are night time hours.....if the weather is not nice I still can't get online!)

wb Cheryl! To answer some of your questions...patternless = vanishing stripe for the most part. The major big stuff on here...everybody has cinders or het cinders or hypo pewters except for me. Rob Stevens of Bayou Reptiles has joined us and is creating havoc between my wish list and my financial situation. Just look at all the lovelies he's been posting. Other than that, everything is basically the same, just a year later.

Hi Cheryl! Hugs to all!
Other than that, everything is basically the same, just a year later.

Weeeelll...except we all have more snakes, spidies, lizards, turtles, dogs, guns, motorcycles and angst against the USFW!

It's good to hear everyone is doing well. I really am going to make an effort to be around more~ but there is just no way I'll be able to keep up the way I used to~ just TOO much to do. You know me though~ I'm loving it~ the busier I am the happier I am! But I miss y'all! So I'm going to try to be around more!

So good to see y'all again!
so my guess was right~ it was a vanishing stripe he asked about~ when I wrote him back asking if he meant vanishing stripe he did not write me back again......I thought maybe he had written me off as an idiot! Guess he just lost interest in the conversation~ or maybe he didn't know if he meant vanishing stripe or not! LOL!

Gotta jet~ I just heard crowing.....I think one of my two "Hens" just became a rooster! Tootles!

we are in general chit chat~ but are you sure you want poultry pics? I've got a lot of poultry now (I might be a little obsessed~ some might call it a little.......problem)
I have
2 three month old hens (mongrels~ a hen and a rooster I'm thinking now!)
72 three week old chicks
12 two month old Turkey poults (5 blue slate, 7 royal palm)
9 three week old african geese
5 ducks (brown and white~ don't know what they are~ got them at tractor supply about 5 weeks ago as ducklings)
and 1 two month old emu (sad story right now~ he's very sick~ vet has given up~ I think he has given up~ I have not yet)

a bunch of pics here
http://www.thereddragonsden.com/HomeStead.htm

at the bottom of that page are links to a journal I've been keeping about hatching Ebay the Emu. It's very long~ and like I said~ very sad right now. I heard about a new vet in the area yesterday that has actually seen emu before~ I'm gonna try him later this morning.

Great to hear from you!

I was just thinking about you this past week when I re-read an old thread you had participated in. Wondered how you were doing!

I used to keep a fair number of poultry at our last place (back in the '80s). I really do miss them. But now we live in a little bit "wilder" of a place, and there are more predators here. We would have to keep poultry penned all of the time. I really like to see them run loose, and to get some of their nutrition from the seeds and bugs they find on the land.

We had bought a bunch of "weird" chickens from Murray McMurray (sp?) hatcheries - I think they are still in business. They had every kind of chicken you could imagine, and a few you couldn't.

It is really fun going out and getting your own fresh, free range eggs, isn't it? And then finding a hen who hid the clutch, incubated them, and now has a bunch of babies following her around - I really miss those days! About the only downside is worrying about predators.

You should get Chuck's new '08 Morph Guide. It is the best one so far, in my opinion, and will really bring you up to speed on anything you missed.

Do you still keep ball pythons? Any action on them this year? Any other herps besides corns?

What part of Alabama are you in?

I don't suppose you will make it to Daytona? How about New Orleans in early June - I think we are going to that show too.

Good to hear from you again!

The book is a good idea~ I'll buy it!

Yep~ still keeping BPs~ got 5 clutches down so far~ mostly poss het pieds and het albino's. The poss het girl finally dropped me 4 good eggs off the albino~ so keeping fingers crossed!

I don't think I'll make any of the shows this year~ too much going on here. I am having a lot of fun~ mostly. Just got back from the new vet with Ebay the Emu. I think he wanted to euthanize him~ but I started to crying (I really tried not to) and by the time I had worked through the vets box of kleenex he had taken a new Xray of him~ shot some antibiotics into his jugular vein and given me more antibiotics and steriods to give at home. He doesn't think Ebay will make it though. Thinks it might be genetic~ keeping him from processing the feed I am forcing into him. Thats what weakened him so he got the viral infection and so that now he has pnuemonia (SP?).

I hate the "there is nothing you can do about it" part~
But mostly I love it here~
Oh~ Here is North Alabama~ a little south of Huntsville.

Isn't that fairly close to Monticello (sp?) where Burt Langerwerf (Agama International) is? He has quite an amazing lizard operation there!

WOW!

I didn't know there was still some Alabama 200 miles north of him! He seemed pretty far north. He gets snow up there! Yuck! I grew up in Wisconsin - saw enough snow to last a lifetime. Nice on postcards, but not in real life! Must be quite an adjustment from SoCal.

Hi there Cheryl!

Sorry to hear about Ebay the Emu :( Hope he pulls through for you... doctors aren't always right.

I happen to know where Huntsville is... I still have a great aunt and some second & third cousins probably two or three times removed who still live there. The other part of that side of the family lives in Florence.

He’s gone.
Ebay died around 1:30 this afternoon. We went to a new vet this morning. The vet wanted to euthanize him~ but I began crying so the vet tried some more antibiotics and steroids. He didn’t believe Ebay would survive and tried to comfort me. The nice man actually hugged me. I’m embarrassed I became so emotional.

Ebay had pneumonia. Probably caused by aspirating some of the food I forced into him in the last two weeks. He was in bad shape and I should have let the vet euthanize him. It was stupid to let myself get so emotionally attached to him. I knew there was every good chance I could not raise him successfully. It was amazing he hatched at all~ and the reason I resisted so many suggestions I write a book about it is I knew very well that we had only proven that I could hatch an emu~ not that I could raise one. Well now we have proven that I could not raise him.

This mornings vet speculated that he probably has a genetic issue that was keeping him from fully absorbing the nutrients in the food he was eating. That’s why he did so well while young~ while he still had yolk to work with~ and began declining despite all medical care~ at this vet and the previous one. He took another Xray~ there was nothing blocking him up~ Ebay was just starving to death despite my forcing feed into him.

I probably should have gotten a necropsy done~ but it is Saturday and no vets are open till Monday. Scott and Will buried him shortly after he passed away while I cleaned up his kennel and threw out all his medications~ and I’m just going to move on and try not to think about it too much. I never should have let myself get emotionally attached to him. I knew it was a bad idea to start with and I should have stuck to it. It wouldn’t hurt so much now if I didn’t let myself think of him as a “pet.”
