Gamaliel's Principle
Well, Carol, if one were to say to one's mother, sister, brother, significant other, hey, let's go get a coke...then that means it could be anything carbonated. One won't know for sure precisely what kind of "soda/cola" until one gets there and decides.
But as the years have gone by, I think we are more specific. Sometime (in the 80's, maybe) they stopped asking what kind and if you said coke without thinking, then a Coca-Cola is what you got. I 'think' that is what later prompted drive-thrus to now ask "what flavor drink would you like, sir/ma'am?"
Pops is a friendly term of endearment for an elderly man, white or often black. I have probably never said the word "pop" in my life. In fact, I will pay $10 to the first person, here or in Daytona, who can trick me into saying something so out of character as the word "pop".
I might even buy them a coke. But I will ask them what kind they'd like beforehand.
