Sole Survivor Boot Key Hatchling

Nanci

Alien Lover
I bought a pair of 2009 Boot Key localities this spring. I found out by surprise that they had been housed together, and had taken advantage of that to breed. The female, Scarlett, laid a clutch of 5 great-looking eggs, but they all went bad except one. I was just happy that such a small mother snake laid and recovered (and looks to be going to double clutch, now that she has doubled in weight!) without harm.

Here's the new baby!! I'm not going to pop it till after s/he feeds. Might be a female. But knowing my luck this year, I should just start calling him him now!!

The little guy hatched at Day 77. I was spared a lot of worrying because I had estimated the lay date at August 1st when I entered it into my day counter, and only went back last week and figured out the real date, July 23rd!! I've only been checking twice a day for a few days!!

The couple people I talked to who had bred these before had scared me about how tiny the hatchlings would be, but the eggs seemed decent-sized, and the hatchie weighed in at 4.9! Bigger than a couple of the Miamis!

You should see the belly! Rosy pink adorableness! Impossible to photograph without upsetting the baby, though.

Well, Nanci, that is fascinating! I had not forgotten about those eggs.
And this makes the one survivor all the more special. How nice.

EDIT : I had figured they would be smallish, lean and lanky babies. Glad it is so robust.

Last pic! I feel bad that the other four eggs didn't make it. But Scarlett will be big and healthy by next season, and I'll try again! I am happy to have one cute baby instead of a pile of slugs...

Thanks for looking!!

A BIG congrats Nanci! Tis a very cute little one. I've been eagerly awaiting news on this little clutch.

He is one of the best hatchlings I have ever seen, when he calms down we would love to see a pic of his belly. I love his color!!!
Congrats
