Genesis 9:1-3 says: "Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you will fall upon all of the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, now I give you everything."

Romans, Chapter 14

Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters. One man's faith allows him to eat everything, but another man, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. The man who eats everything must not look down on him who does not, and the man who does not eat everything must not condemn the man who does, for God has accepted him. Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

Furthermore, if Jesus was a real advocate for vegetarianism then he would not have fed the multitude with fish. He would have used some sort of vegetable. Clearly, if he wanted people to be vegetarian or vegan he would demonstrate this by example. He clearly didn’t. Sorry, but if you are looking for compassion in the Bible towards animals, or even towards people for that matter, you won’t find that much of it.

Leviticus 11
11:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them, 11:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth. 11:3 Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat.

I could literally go on and on, but I think this is enough to make the point that God or god is not against eating meat. Now if you look at the deadly sins, gluttony is certainly one of them, and that's evidenced by increasingly overweight americans. You might make a case for a non-twinkie diet risking more lives than vegans or omnivores alone. Regardless, the only thing that is irking me about you Tara is that you say you're being bullied throughout this thread, but the reality is you bring it on yourself with statements like "uneducated omnivores amuse me." That's directed squarely at Chris and you know it. Chris is far from being uneducated, and he's passionate about what he believes in, and he's not once attacked you, yet you have repeatedly done so. It's hard to respect your lifestyle when you're clearly telling us how ignorant and uneducated we are. Does that make sense?

I could care less about this figure called "god" just seems the conservative religouse people eat meat. Im a Pagan and go to the UU church, theyall agree on their grandma's dinner table of meat and potatoes...(outdated when it comes to health) I don't care if you put yourself more at risk for colon cancer or the puss and blood in your dairy....that's your choice. However, I *haVe* been singled out. Doesn't really bother me ....makes me kinda chuckle at the outdated education.

YOU are the ONLY person that has singled you out. YOU are the ONLY person insisting that one way is better than the other. YOU are the only one insulting people that won't be "converted" to your way of thinking.

You say that you don't care who eats what, and you accept everyone, but here you are hurling insults at anyone that doesn't accept your word and the word of your personal physician as a lifechanging ultimatum.

Keep chuckling. You gotta hold on to something, I suppose...

BTW...I'm FAR from a conservative ANYthing...But I do loves me some meat!

Well Tara you must have cared enough to list quote after quote in the bible that god never intended his children to eat meat, right? Or are you just unhappy that I called BS on it? Either way, by you continuing to call us "undeducated" because we dont do what you do....tacky and classless, basically.

And Lauren, did you just call my boyfriend a gorilla??? I guess this is as good a time as any to tell you that Violet is on a bus heading back to MD. She kept me up all night knocking over two snake tubs and releasing the inhabitants. She says she prefers cavies! :grin01: Let me know when she gets there safely!

Just one I do volunteer work for. We try to help people lke you.

Well, I don't need your help. I'm perfectly happy and healthy in my life and with my lifestyle choices.

That's part of the problem. You act like you are on some crusade to save lives, and if we don't follow your ways, we're doomed to a painful existence and an early death...

Wait a minute. I just figured it out! No WONDER you don't believe in god...you ARE god!!!:roflmao::sidestep:

Excuse me!! This post needs to be moderated! I want an infraction handed out! *points* She threatened me!!! :sidestep:

LOL! Just wait til the spawn of satan returns to your doorstep! THEN you can call for infractions!

By now you are doomed. She is imprinted on that wonderful Indy air. We'll turn her loose. Three weeks from now she'll be back to darkening your door step.

This thread is ridiculous. Honestly, at first I felt that it was highly generalized, and generalizations always bother me. But now both sides are generalizing, and I shouldn't, nor do I, feel the least bit guilty about being an Omnivore. I respect Vegan/Vegetarians, and I'm sure there are health benefits. But the key is understanding health and nutrition, and there are many ways to do so.

Look at our athletes. They are the epitome of finely tuned human machines, and I'm sure that those who are Omnivores are as healthy as any vegan/vegetarian. I'm not dissing Vegans/Vegetarians, because it's a choice, and to each their own. It's great to be health conscious, and there are things about the Vegan/Vegetarian lifestyle that I can appreciate.

As for PETA! What do they know? Honestly! I'm not starting a debate, but the whole PETA idea that being a Vegan/Vegetarian is a way of saving the planet is wrong (sorry). So long as people use public roadways, electricity, buy anything that came from a factory, wear clothes they didn't make, drive cars, etc... We are all equal contributors to the destruction of our planet.

I don't need any help, I just need to stop being lazy..

Omnivour forever.. The key though is moderation, d'uh.. *lol* Isn't there something else out there I need saving for? *g*

Regards.. Tim of T and J

Honestly, it is down to research. Veg heads have a longer life span, it's just true. I don't care who eats meat, you can still come over for steak. I won't judge you. You just have to realize my colon cancer rate is less.

Now mind you Wikipedia is not always the most reliable source if info...but in this case..you just need the basics. The worlds oldest (undisputed) person....enjoyed his fish and chicken.
So where is the outdated education now?
The 70s are calling...They miss you. OH wait...not the 70s...the yuppies they call them now adays.

Do you know what's even better than veggies? Organic ones that you pay 5 times as much for!

I mean, if it was really such a significant health benefit over a balanced omnivorous, you'd think I would have heard about before now.

I'm trying to figure out how to explain this without making it sound like I think being vegetarian is 'healthier'. I guess hmm ok let me try to explain.

There are some statistical benefits (I have listed several of them in previous posts) to being a vegetarian in the sense that studies have shown that for example "Vegetarians have a significantly lower rate of cancer than the general population.(p 209)" This is attributed to a higher intake of fruits/vegetables/fiber with lower intakes of saturated fats. Now of course a vegetarian who fries everything and eats few fruits/vegs and instead eats a lot of processed food, and white bread will not have these lower rates, where as an omnivore who eats very healthfully is likely to have lower rates of cancer than the general population as well.

So technically (statistically speaking) there are benefits, *but* I have never been told or made to believe or read in any of my nutrion classes/books, etc that an omnivore diet could not have the same benefits if their fruit/veggie/fiber/saturated fat consumption was similar to the vegetarians.

So while it is technically true that they have a lower rate of cancer, that isn't because eating meat causes cancer, it is because the general population does not eat enough fruits/veg/fiber, and they eat to many saturated fats. So that is why for me, I come down to either of the diets if implemented properly can and are healthy.

Hopefully I explained it right.

Who is Violet?

The cat Lori adopted from us last year. We DID tell her that Violet was an outdoor cat with a propensity for... well... destruction. It was in the fine print of the terms. :grin01:

This thread is ridiculous.

Was it the pandas??? :sidestep:

We are all equal contributors to the destruction of our planet.

This is human arrogance. This planet survived millions of years without us. It will survive after us too.

Who's not playing nice? We're all going to die soon anyway.

(Which actually is true... I mean, health is merely the slowest possible way of dying)
There is more truth in this than people care to see! We are ALL going to die. Sorry to break the news to everyone so bluntly.
All that matters (and I mean ALL), is how we treat each other, how we care for those that less fortunate, and leaving our environment a more positive place than how we found it.
No ones above death, and no one can choose when and how they will die. I might not drink alcohol, but that doesn't mean that I can't be killed in a drunk driving accident. We can't control our fates, and we can't try to control others.
