Star Trek!!! What did YOU think?

Well, since I saw the "Land of the Lost" thread, I figured I'd start this one. I've been a fan of Star Trek since I was a kid and have followed it through the years as a "Trekker". LOL. :crazy01:

I'm interested in what those of you who watched it thought and if you caught on to the myriad of references to the past/future episodes.

Are you a fan or not and did you enjoy this movie or any of the other movies?

I'll share my thoughts as people respond! :D

HI Fred! This was a movie I wanted to see. Since hubby is home from Afghanistan for only a short time I decided to let him take the kids instead.

But the reviews from the kids were:
"That was the bestest movie ever!"
"It was awesome!"
"Can we go see it again!"
and
"That was soooo cool!"

So I think the consensus was it was a really good movie. LOL

I went and saw it Sunday night with high expectations. Both of the franchise and the fact that JJ Abrams was the director.
And I was not disappointed!

I really liked the character development (don't want to give away too much for those that have not seen it yet) and the way that they do leave it open for more movies down the road. I was apprehensive about Zachary Quinto as Spock because I am used to seeing him as the bad guy Siler on Heroes...thought I might not be able to separate the two - but he really did a great job in the role of Spock. I also got a kick out of Scotty and Bones.

There were a few "twists" that I didn't really see coming which only added to the overall movie - and of course the special effects/CG were awesome.

I haven't seen it, but I thought die hard fans called themselves Trekkies, not Trekkers??
Nope... true ST fans call themselves Trekkers... The media and others not in the know call us "Trekkies". LOL.

Not that big of a deal though. I actually called myself a "Trekkie" the other day and my brother corrected me. LOL.

Becky -- Sorry you missed it, Becky. You'll need to go while it is still on the "big screen" if you get a chance. My wife and I went to go see it on our "weekend away" (got to stay at a Ritz-Carlton! Whooo hoo!). After watching it, I kept pestering her with comments like, "If we eat lunch/dinner quickly, we can go back and see the 2:00/6:00 showing!!" Fortunately, I was able to see it again with my son Sunday night. If I were there, I'd definitely take your kids AGAIN!

Also OT... As for the hubby... PLEASE do the same for me as Tsst. As an Army brat, I also do appreciate servicemen/women and their families.

Katie - Character development was really great. I appreciated the fact that there was an effort to "remain true" while still leaving room for new things too. I too was VERY apprehensive about "Siler" playing "Spock" but he really did pan out in the end. I was a little disappointed by the lack of one certain important actor (initials W.S.), but can see why (for the sake of the new guy) they decided to not cameo him in.

I'm trying to figure out where I've seen "Sulu" before... LOL.

TSST - Drop what you're doing and take your son!!! You won't be sorry! LOL. Let us know what you think when you both have seen it!

As a movie I enjoyed it, but as being part of the Star Trek franchise I'm a little annoyed. They basically wiped out much of what we know as being core Star Trek facts. I know that now the slate is clean and they can essentially start over but come on? A whole planet gone, so what happens to Amok Time? With mom gone what happens to the Tower of Babel? And will the new Captain Pike still want to go to Talos IV? So many character developing moments now lost to JJ's need to reboot. Lesson IMHO: Abrams, the non fan, should have had an assistant who at least watched some of the old shows to guide him.

I haven't seen but maybe a half an episode of star trek, but I am very interested in seeing this movie. We were going to watch it opening weekend but ran into money issues. Who knows, maybe after seeing it I'll get the urge to watch the episodes.

I thought it was great when I saw Simon Pegg was playing Scottie.

Terri: I sent you a PM as to not "spoil" anything for anyone who might not yet have watched it. Please read and let me know your thoughts!

Let me tell ya, I really enjoyed Simon's version of Scottie. If things continue, I think he'll fit the bill quite nicely!!!

As for watching all the episodes... I hope you do whether you watch the movie or not. But that's just 'cause I'm a fan! LOL.

If ya'll didn't know, I THINK my wife said that most of the cast are slated to do a total of 3 movies!! I certainly hope so!

I never said I didn't enjoy the movie. I did and will see it again in the theater, I liked it that much. I'm just well, old. Change to beloved characters is hard to accept, but I'll get over it. I liken it to reading the Harry Potter books and then seeing the movies and saying but what about Peeves or the Deathday Party or...? It's a fun movie with tons of potential. I'd recommend it whether you like the series or not.
Terri
PS-I was trying to be obfuscatory with my original post so as not to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen the movie. I hope I didn't ruin anyone's fun.;)

Both good points, both hold merit.

I haven't seen it, but I thought die hard fans called themselves Trekkies, not Trekkers??

I consider myself a Trekkie. Only because I really liked the original series, the movies, and a great number of the novels. The last 3 or 4 years of NG, a handful of Voyager and DS-9 (better than NG IMO), and thought Enterprise was second best series.
And the fact I've never uttered a word of Klingon, doned Spock ears, or had home made Romulan ale. Or been to a convention.

My review....

LOVED IT!!!! So amazing and want to see it again. Definitely a "big-screen" must. It just won't be the same rented. I want to take my mom to it. She's a "Trekkie" or sorts. (yes, we call them Trekkies, wrong or not, lol).

I grew up watching the series with her and it was good memories. We also liked The Next Generation and Voyager. Didn't get much into Deep Space 9.

Me being somewhat of a Star Trek fan...(didn't mind the show and liked a few of the characters but never truely followed every episode)...I went seeing it feeling that I probably wouldn't be disappointed as I didn't fully know what to expect..Sure enough I thought it was a great movie! I loved the fact that today's technology with graphics and effects was able to really bring out the best in this series! I think if they re-made the show or brought a new Star Trek show with all of today's technology and effects, I don't think it would be bad at all :0)

Actually.....

I've seen the original series on the tube recently and they have updated battle scenes and ship scenes with modern CG. It looks pretty cool.

We went and took the kids. We watched the first 4 movies and some of the original series so they had a little bit of a background. We all loved the film. I am not that much of a fan that I remember all the original shows so whatever they changed really didn't matter to me. I thought they did a wonderful job with the characters and the story line was great.

As we were leaving the theater my 9 year old daughter piped up that she thought that Capt. Kirk was hot! (Yes she will be trouble!) I laughed and told her that when I was her age I thought that the original Capt. Kirk was cute, at which point another theater goer (an old fart like me) agreed!

:)

I actually got to work on this film. Largest film I've had the honor of being a part of to date... and it's awfully swell to get to see a movie I worked on that actually doesn't SUCK for a change! LOL!!!

It was about two years ago. I worked for Barney Burman/Proteus FX- the shop responsible for building the aliens/makeups. There were SO MANY amazing amazing things we built that were shot but didn't make the final cut. As the studio releases pics, I'll post them here for you all to see!

My personal pet project on this was building the deep backround masks. Anything you was pass by in the backround that looked like an alien that you never got to see clearly... I created those. Hahahaha. One blue colored lass was my favorite, and you see her in a few scenes (she was a cadet). I actually modeled her paint job after that Sailfin Dragon that was on the cover of Reptiles Magazine some time ago!

Anyways... I loved the film! I was never hugely into the ST franchise... was always a bit more of a Star Wars gal myself. But still, I really enjoyed it. And I promise to post pics once I get the clearance to do so. :)

I haven't seen it, but I have heard it is great!!
I thought treckies were the real die-hards and the ones who go to a few conventions but don't obsess are called treckers..

I LOVED it!

I went with some friends last night, and we all loved it. I grew up on the original series, and it (Spock, in particular) actually had some impact on my life philosophy. I also enjoyed The Next Generation A LOT, and the other series, too, to a lesser extent.

After spending a lifetime with the Star Trek universe, it was fun to see the back story of the original characters, how they came to be the people we "know", and how they came together. And it was fun to see if the young cast members portrayed them in the way I hoped they would. I thought Spock looked incredibly like "our" Spock. And I thought Bones really had the speech mannerisms and gestures down - I could really think of him as the "Real McCoy", lol!

I was also shocked at some of the events contrary to what we know "to be true" of the ST world. But I am guessing they might find some way to reconcile those in the next installment - hope it is a better explanation than some "dream scene", haha! Maybe some time travel, or alternate worlds; maybe Q will be back - who knows what they might come up with to explain themselves?

But no matter the inconsistencies - I loved it anyway, and will go back to see it in IMAX with the same friends, when hubby returns from Australia in a week or two.
