Starting to hit the bandwidth ceiling....

Well, I've gotten my first notification about being over the traffic bandwidth limit on my server. I have tried cutting down the number of messages that will display in each thread, so the size of the file sent to each viewer will be smaller. Hopefully this will work.

If not, I may have to disable the posting of attached images (the ones people upload from their local system). Each time a photo is uploaded as well as each time it is viewed counts towards the bandwidth limit.

I'm asking you all to do your part as well. I will list some guidelines that you can use to help keep the bandwidth down somewhat:

(1) If you have already sold an item that is in an ad, please delete it. Same thing if a Wanted Ad has been filled.

(2) If you wish to upload an image, you can still do so, but pick out one GOOD one rather than uploading as many as you took with the camera. Images take up a LOT of bandwidth.

(3) Cut down your signature area to the bare minimum. Is it really necessary to list every animal you have there?

(4) If you are having a one-on-one discussion with another member here, consider doing it via email. Everyone else really doesn't need to see your conversation.

A little bit of common sense will go a long way.

Thanks.

Will deleting alot of our old posts, especially in the Photo Gallery help? I love seeing everyone's pics, but, as for me, once I see them, I rarely go back again, especially a month or more back.

I just deleted 99% of my Photo Gallery posts older than 11/1/02. I had forgotten about alot of them and am glad they're gone. Many weren't that good. Hope this helps and, if so, that others follow my lead.

Yes, that is probably a good idea. Especially when many people will have gained more experience with their new digital cameras and gotten better results out of it. Many people might be surprised at how lame their earlier photos now look to them.

I recently took down my photo gallery section because the photos there were from prints I scanned in with a flat bed scanner I had. I hated that thing. Getting a half way decent scan was like pulling teeth from an alligator. I didn't realize how awful they actually were until I went back to look at them recently. So I just deep-sized the whole shebang and pointed the gallery link to the one I have on this site.

As for that scanner, a while back I dropped it off at the local Goodwill office and ran like hell.

Anyway, thanks for your help.

Maybe you could make something like expiration dates on photo gallery posts?
I mean, I totally agree with Susan, I rarely (if ever) view the same thread more than once and after they get to the 2nd, 3rd, 4th pages, forget it! I'm not going digging back there unless it's something really special like a butter stripe pic :).
and just to make things easier for you in general, maybe you could a couple of appoint moderators to delete old/irrelevant threads instead of always going through every thread/post by yourself. Lots of other forums I belong to have like 1 mod per section or so to enforce forum rules and things.
If you disable pic uploading, that shouldn't be too big of a problem for most people since you can get free accounts from places like boomspeed, ranchoweb, and printroom.

Just deleted around 75 posts (and knocked back my posts from 260 something to 125, hee hee), so hope that helps. You're right, there were a lot of pictures I had forgotten ever posting.

I may be getting a resolution to this bandwidth problem. I am negotiating now for another server from a different company. LOTS more bandwidth comes with it. 300 gigabytes per month. Should be a while before I have to worry about this problem again.

Of course, it means transferring all of the domains over to it, so that will certainly be a pain in the butt. Also will mean some downtime somewhere down the road. My current server contract doesn't run out until late January, so I've got some time and don't have to do this in panic mode.

We'll see how this works out.

Man, does anyone remember what the word 'bored' means?

Some ideas to help save bandwith (I visit a forum that has bandwith problems as well, but they have 20000+ members)

-Use offsite linkings for pictures (www.theforumisdown.com is and excellent place to host pics - max size 100k)

-Make your avatars no more than 10k, or do not use an avatar

-Cut signature length down to 5 or 6 lines max with no fancy formatting

Thats about all. Enjoy

p.s. The other forum is a forum dedicated to overclockingyour computer.

btw these are only suggestions :)

What about going through and deleting and cleaning out old private messages? Would that have anything to do with saving bandwidth? (have no clue what that is LOL)

bmm

Private messages take up hard drive space on the forum mainly - it is very doubtful that they even consume > 1% of the bandwith here (unless you people send pm's like you buy corns :))

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have decided to take an alternate route. Instead of having a server with a bandwidth cap of 50 gigabytes, I'll get one with a cap of 300 gigabytes. That should solve the problem for a little while!
