Stray dog. Slight rant.

We have something called the SNAP program. I have to take my information to the public library, they are only open on Tuesdays and only between 6 and 7 pm. I'm going to go there and see if they can help. It's 'spay/neuter assistance program.'

Bless you for taking in that poor girl - she looks happy now! I know it's hard to take on the expense of "another one", but sometimes it's harder to turn your head and walk away from them.

I have 3 euthanasia-list rescue dogs - all seniors, and all have health issues. Vet bills are out of control, but these guys are my family, and fortunately, my vet gives me discounts and works with me on payments.

I hope you can get her spayed at a reasonable price. Good luck, and let us know how things are going.

Kathy

My vet has been pretty good to me, they work with me some and that's something they don't usually do with most people. I've been taking animals there since I was kid and made my parents take me. She knows I do everything in my power and because of that she's usually willing to work with me. If I'm elidgable for the snap program it will cost $55 for her spay. I just have so many to do. A total of 4 canine spays and a cat neuter. I'm relying a lot on my tax return for this. I needed that money to get moved out but we can pinch pennies if we have to. Somehow things work out.

It's cruddy and slushy outside... Sadie is entertaining herself right now by beating her brains out with a stuffed penguin dog toy. Not as hard as the rope but... lol she's cracking me up. It just went flying though the air. What do you know, penguins can fly.

I'm glad you named her :). Just imagine where she might be right now if you hadn't taken her in. It has to warm your heart knowing she is safe.

You have done such a good deed with this dog! I so wish I could send you some money to help out, but I'm still paying for two dental cleanings, and my third dog is overdue for hers. Plus heartworm season is upon us now too. :(

I'm also waiting on my tax return, which usually goes for vet bills!

Kathy

I've been following, so glad that she found you and you took her in. We have an Aussie and it breaks my heart when they are mistreated. Well it breaks my heart when any animal is mistreated but especially Aussies.

If she is in active heat and still bleeding then she probably did not hook up with the male you saw her with. Females are not usually fertile til the 13th day of their heat cycle and they are also not usually still bleeding at that point. I say usually because there are always exceptions lol. It's why so many "accidents" happen. People think that b/c the bleeding has stopped their female can't get pregnant anymore, when in reality that's the time they are most fertile.

You people are the best. Here's a happy update, Sadie is already gaining weight on nothing more than kibbles n' bits. Kind of happy... it's just sad that a little food is all it took to get her gaining. Remember I've only had her since tuesday evening. I wish I could weigh her, she's still bony but not in the sad skeletal condition she was in the day she found us.
She got an ID tag today in case she slips out the door by accident, I'm paranoid like that.

Apparently she knows what a kennel is, she keeps going to it when she's not in our room with us, she comes straight in from her walks outside (still on the 30 ft leash) and goes right to the kennel and lays down in it. It just keeps painting a sad picture about her short life to me. Less than a year old, had puppies, dumped on the street and probably kept in a kennel most of her life. We only put her in it once for maybe half an hour to see how she would do when we have to leave the house, but already she goes to it on her own. I can't help but wonder who did this to her and what her life had been.
Well, whatever it was she's turning around now, going to the vet tuesday, vaccines and exam. And from the vet I'll be going to sign up for SNAP and get her an appointment if the vet agrees she's healthy enough by then. She's an energetic puppy but she gets tired really fast.

Daaaw, thank you for taking her in...you are awesome!!

Is heartworm prevalent in your area? I only ask, because for such a young dog it's odd that she would tire so quickly after playing...I would consider a heart worm test to just rule that out. Just a suggestion though :)

I have actually thought about heart worm, I'll definitely ask about it and see if I can swing it. Right now I've just kind of chalked it up to her being so thin and malnourished. She seems to have a little more energy every day. Oh while I was at work today Chris told me that when he took Sadie outside she uncovered her large milkbone she buried and ate it lol. She's such a cutie.

Sadie Simpleton is doing really well so far. Her milk is drying up but she's got big purple and red welts on her belly. I've seen the little pimple things but nothing like this, they don't seem to have anything in them, just a round puffed up area that is purple in the middle and red around the edge. Either way I'm not messing with them, I'm cleaning her belly with tea tree oil and it seems to help. Can't wait to get her to the vet.

Pyoderma, it's in the middle of her belly and I assume it's from all the moisture and filth from her big saggy mammaries. :p Ain't no thang, we'll get it treated.

Have you managed to do a heartworm test? You live in an area where, if the dog is not on preventative, it probably has heartworms.

One thing after another... my oldest pup is starting to have seizures. My little old man is starting his decline.

When it rains, it pours, doesn't it?! :(

I'm sorry you're having to deal with these pooch problems. Is there anywhere in your area that offers low-cost and/or income-based veterinary care - humane society, rescue groups, or community outreach programs?

Good luck with both of them, and please keep us updated!

Kathy

Well, got Sadie looked at today, got her started on puppy vaccines and got her rabies vaccine. We were going to sign up for the snap program but after spending $450 today we just couldn't do it, it will have to wait until another tuesday because with SNAP you have to pay upfront. Rose got spayed today, mandatory blood panel because of her age, and got a broken tooth pulled. Mouse, the kitty, got her steroid shot and is sleeping it off. I don't know who's more exhausted, the animals, or me. We're spending tonight at a friends house and what time Sadie isn't snoozing she's beating her brains out with my friends' dogs teddy bear. There is currently a thick layer of teddy stuffing all over the floor.
