Tap Water

OMG. What will happen to the millions of who live to be 100 yrs or olders. a
All of us humans who have drank tap water all our lives..Not to mention our pet snakes..

A report by the Environmental Working Group, called "Into the Mouths of Babes", found that of 29 mid western cities tested, all had at least one agricultural chemical present in a single glass of water, and most had five or more. These are chemicals that are not safe to ingest at the levels found.
EWG recommends not giving tap water to children if you live in cities that test positive for these contaminants.

Do you have a link? A quick search didn't turn anything up other than references to the study.

Thank you!

Ah, I remember you now Wally. Interesting to see you've crawled out of the woodwork once more.

There are definitely some places where I would never use their tap water for my snakes. A grand example was actually the science building at my first college. The water tasted different on each floor. That fact was frightening enough that I never drank from the fountains there after running my experiment.

Most places though, the tap should be fine.

Just because water doesn`t taste good doesn`t make it bad.Take it from a licensed drinking water operator.. Theres more contaminates in beer if you ever had one. Preservative are in almost all our food...

O.K. Did anybody die or get sick that you know of?

Hmmmn... let's see.

Why yes, some people did get sick. In fact, the water was shut down at least twice in that building for bacterial build up in the pipes. :D

Also, I never said the water tasted *bad*.... it was just different on each floor.

BTW, slightly off topic, they are a fantastic resource for which personal care products are the safer choice. I am on their website all the time.

And, to Willy: I actually DO use tap water for my snakes. I even drink the tap water here. The city I live in has NEVER failed a water contaminate test. They were rated the 2nd safest water in the country.
When I lived in a big city, I wouldn't even BATHE in the tap water... I used a filter. All my animals got reverse osmosis water.

Some people live to 100 and smoke and drink.
So what? I'm gonna do the best I can by my animals.

I am not going to ever say you SHOULDN'T give your snakes tap water, just that there are risks inherent with it. Chlorine levels can be toxic in many cities. Water dishes become harder to clean with hard water. Other toxins may hurt or kill your snake. It is a risk... just like breeding your snake or shipping your snake or any of the other risks you might take.
Educate yourself, though... instead of saying "UH-UH... that sounds silly."

I don't know if it's been brought up but any form of pure water without minerals can dehydrate a person/creature through osmosis.

Because water such as distilled and deionized ro water contain nothing but water when it enters the body, the process of osmosis pulls salts, minerals and everything else it's missing into the water from the body.

If you don't believe me try drinking only distilled water and see how you start to feel. I tested this with deionized ro water and the results spoke for themselves , all the signs of dehydration and constant thirst, no matter how much I drank.

Me too. If it`s safe for humans then its good enough for snakes.. Just because people buy bottled water doesn`t mean tap water is not safe. If it was not safe it would not be allowed for humans to consume. It gets tested rigorously on a daily basis for contaminants that may be harmful to humans..

Every 2days for me. Started off daily but she wasn't drinking all that much so figured every other day would be ok.

The tap water here is disgusting. It tastes like dirt. Our snakes, and our cat drink the same reverse osmosis water we do.

Depends on what I have...I generally use tap water for the snakes, but when it's really warm out the water tastes disgusting (a more chemical taste with undertones of swamp). I won't drink it, and if I won't drink it, I won't give it to my animals. I buy gallon jugs of spring water for those times.

(and most of the time, my tap water is filtered via Brita, because that's how I drink it. My animals drink exactly what I do.)
