Finally finished up with my taxes and printed the forms out today. The forms I have to send to the IRS number around 24. However, and get this, the number of forms I am retaining in case I get audited and include all the worksheets and other crap number 82 frickin' forms! Now that is just downright ridiculous!

It is completely outrageous that we as Americans (land of the free, home of the brave) have to put up with this kind of crap from our government. How many manhours, resources, and materials are being wasted YEARLY by everyone trying to fulfill the obligations of paying taxes in such a complicated and convoluted system as this that requires all these forms?

And doncha just LOVE how the people who work for the IRS are not held responsible if they give you the wrong information?
Don't get me started, I support the Flat Tax myself :)

The reason the "flat tax" proposal never worked when brought up is because it never was really a FLAT tax. It was still progressive because only the percentage was FLAT. So a 10 percent "flat tax" means that if you make $20,000 you have to pay $2,000. If you make $200,000, then you have to pay $20,000. That is NOT flat! It still puts a heavier burden on those who earn more for their labor.

What the government needs to do is act like a business. Run a census to determine how many taxable citizens there are in this country. Then figure out a REAL budget. Divide that budget by the number of taxable citizens, and that is what each person OWES for taxes that year. Doesn't matter who you are, what you make, or what you do. That is your BILL to be an American citizen. Don't want to pay your bill? Fine.... The boat leaves in the morning... Enjoy your new country. Which, since most other countries aren't going to want you either, will probably be Antarctica.

See I always thought that taxing everyone at the same percentage was fair because then no one paid a larger percentage than anyone else. Plus there would be no loopholes. I think the REAL reason it won't see the light of day is because of all the accountants, CPAs and bean counters that will be suddenly unemployed.

But Rich, I do like your idea. I could easily live with that :)

Unless you get charged at the same rate as Bill Gates and then Rich would have you off on that boat to nowhere. :)

"Thank you for contacting the IRS. Your complaints and concerns are important to us:rofl:. To properly process your complaints, please fill out the 13 attached forms in triplicate. Send copy 1 to Mr. Dewey, copy 2 to Mr. Cheatum and copy 3 to Mr. Howe".

Thank you, now get your butt busy and make us, uhhh....I mean you, more money!!

Actually, a flat tax, when tried, fails because it is too simple. I'm not saying I don't like the idea - I'm just saying it never works.

While on this, why are religions exempt? Division of church and state? My arse! If that was TRUE, then they'd pay taxes like all other employees and buyers of goods/services! Me? I think our .gov should be so small that it was fully supported by tarriffs, bonds, and not much else. Remember the amendment for the IRS was never legally ratified, either. :) Know your history!

Take me - I'd argue that I shouldn't have to pay for too much welfare whether it is a flat tax or not......lol. I would do away with the IRS in a heartbeat and support the federal .gov - if I HAD to - with a sales tax. Not on food and other essentials, but one luxuries. Don't want to pay it? Don't buy the item - invest it or something. Can't afford the item with the tax? Then don't get it. Rich pay more - but only because they PAY more. It works fairly well for state .gov........why not the federal .gov???

Finally, remeber that at the time of the American revolution, tax rates were actually a VERY minor cause of the war....but that tax rat was LESS THAN 2%! I once extimated what I pay in taxes out of each dollar I make. I counted all level of taxes, all "mandatory fees" which are nothing more than taxes, everything (sales, property, taxes i pay indirectly on prices of goods based on taxes levied on companies, EVERYTHING). It was hard to estimate due to indirect taxes, but all of my estimates can to no less that 65 cents and no more than 75 cents on EVERY DOLLAR I made went to the .gov.

That sucks!

Oh they figured that out a long long time ago...But then the American people would have a direct say in where the money is going and the politicians wouldn't be able to spend it on Pork Barrel projects, Scottish golfing "conferences" and prostitutes...
