The Largest Street Gang in America

I think this is too broad of a discussion. Some police forces have corruption, but cops in general keep us safe and protected. I have been pulled over three times, once for speeding, once for a broken brake light, and once for not having my registration sticker attached. The cop that pulled me over for speeding was very nice, and being my first time getting stopped I was scared to death. We actually had a nice conversation about dogs, and he let me on my way with a warning. The second time was for a brake light, he was kind of arrogant, so I was a little short with him, but he just told me to fix it and let me on my way. The third time was for my registration/inspection problem. I was on my way to the garage to get my uninspected car fixed, that way I could get it inspected. He was incredibly nice, and gave me a ticket. But I had the opportunity to have the ticket torn up if I returned within a week to show him my inspection sticker, which I did, and he graciously tore the sticker up.
I think corruption is very minimal, and really only occurs in the big cities where money and drugs causes some officers to get greedy. But in local areas like where I live, I have seen no problems. Alot of people I know complain about the police, like they have nothing better to do other than to pull people over for speeding, DUI, etc.. And the fact is that it's their job, and I'm glad people get punished for driving recklessly.
I just think their are two sections of police officers, those who do good, and those who are corrupt, racist, etc.. But it is unfair to blame all police officers, and their work should be respected as a whole. They risk their lives daily, and are available on a whim to help others.

I'm pretty sure that most of the people in that video had committed no crime.

Since you are sure, I'm sure. Thanks for convincing me.

By the way, I'm pretty sure I'm being sarcastic :sidestep:

Also, Mohrsnakes, when a cop does a random traffic stop, what's the likelihood of being killed?

And to give you an answer. The likelihood of a cop being killed during a random traffic stop should be ZERO. That fact that it is NOT zero makes some cops a little intolerant of stupidity.

I have no evidence of any kind but I'm pretty sure not every cop is bad and ready to kill/maim you just because they have the power to do so.

Yup, I think unless you are there, and witness every thing from beginning to end, you never really know what happened. Media distorts and people lie.

Repeatedly, in many of the cases, you could hear the person asking why they were being arrested and the police refused to answer.

Or the ever common Person: "why am I being arrested?", Officer: "right now, because you're resisting arrest". Than what arrest are they resisting, other than maybe profiling? Or when they ask people on the street for ID, like somehow this is some communist country that requires a reason to simply be enjoying a stroll.

In both Canada and the US police can ask whoever they want for ID. But you only have to show it if they have probable cause to search your person, otherwise if they force you to show ID, it's illegal search and seizure.

Good luck with that, though. If they arrest you it's for their catchall: "Disturbing the peace"

Nova C, wow. Just wow.

In general, cops do their job and do it well. They try to stop criminals and help people. They put their life on the line for me, you, and everyone else in this country.

You want proof? The show Cops ALONE has thousands examples of police following procedure and the law while catching criminals.

Your video only has a few. That alone is proof, unless you can give us something else saying that the MAJORITY of cops are corrupt. :/

I've shown this isn't really true. Cops are under no obligation to protect anyone other than themselves, according to the US Supreme Court.

I'm not sure a TV serial carries a lot of weight since of course the police are going to be following procedure. They're on camera.

The video shows a systemic problem with unaccountability, intimidation and violence within the police departments. I concede that many of the links brought by Jen and Robbie show cops being held accountable for breaking the law, but now we're in the real meat of the issue.

Where to go from here? More and more videos are ending up on youtube and the news showing police acting in a questionable manner. The attitude put forth in this thread by at least one poster was "They must have deserved it" does nothing to improve policing in our countries. I keep asking why cops are held to a lower standard because they should be held to a higher standard.

So we can do better. We need to do better because people are still being arrested, assaulted and killed by police officers for little to no reason. Tazers are being deployed not to prevent injury to officers, but as pain compliance devices and time and again, people are ending up dead. Are we satisfied with the current level of accountability within the police force? I'm not. So I continue to call for more punishments for police who break the law, protections for cops who want to testify against their fellow officers, more training to give cops the tools to de-escalate situations, rather than escalating them.

At some point the good cops out there that you've convinced me do exist need to stand up and say enough is enough.

Just a suggestion, if you do want to find more links, just head to google and type in "Police officer arrested". All the links I posted were found there, within the first two pages, and there were over 4,850,000 results. I, personally, don't feel like sorting through that many and posting only the relevant ones, but you're more than welcome to! LOL.

As far as why they're held to a lower standard, IMPO, it's because of the job they do. People don't WANT to point the finger at a police officer because they're afraid of what might happen. In order to do that, you'd have to have a pretty spotless life of your own, otherwise, when testifying, the officer's defense lawyers will tear you apart.

And yet some still do, don't say it doesn't happen.

So, if you get a video of a police/citizen encounter that goes by the book, no abuse of power, do you put it on youtube or the news? NO, BORING!
I'm sure there are thousands of citizen/police encounters every day that go off by the book, I've seen several myself, never seen a "bad one". Guess I just beat the odds on that?

OK...this is a bit embarassing...but this was my last encounter with my town's finest....

2 weeks ago tonight (at just about this time too) my husband decided that some blueberries would go great in his yoghurt for desert. My mom had brought us a pint, but I had forgotten them in the shop's fridge when we went home at 6. I decided to go back to the shop to get them. I was tired, and when I went to turn off the alarm at the store, my finger stuttered on the pad. Sooo the alarm went off.....
The alarm notifies the police, and calls my house. I shut the alarm off, went into the kitchen and grabbed the blueberries out of the fridge. About 30 seconds later the phone rang. It was my husband....he said "what did you do",...he was rather amused....I was on the phone with him, blueberries in my other hand, when the police arrived. It took them all of 2 minutes to get there.

I was so embarassed, I couldn't stop laughing...it was awful! I kept apoligizing. They asked if I was the owner of the shop, and I said yes I was. They asked my name and birthdate...I held up the blueberries and told them I had forgotten them and had come back for them.

I was REALLY embarrassed...here they are not knowing if it's a break in..and here is this middle aged woman on the phone holding a pint of blueberries!!!

I was just really glad they came so fast. If I WAS breaking it, I wouldn't have had a chance to steal much at all! :)
