Ok, here goes....A few weeks ago I got a quad, 1.3, of ASFR's (African Soft Furred Rats) and have seen over the last week, what I would would call mating behaviour, ie the male chasing the female around the tank (boy have they got some energy...lol), on three seperate occaisions, different female each time.

Anyway my question is....How long does the actual "act" take, as it seems like he's about to get in "position", she stands still, then he backs off and they both clean themselves. Is that it? Does it only take a millisecond for him to impregnate the female, or has he not perfected his "technique" yet?...lol

Can anyone tell me if the deed is done and I should be expecting babies in a couple of weeks? :D

Thanks in advance,

Sounds like my husband!

Thanks, I'll be here all week. Don't forget to tip your waiters!

Sorry, Susielea, couldn't resist. ;)

:roflmao::roflmao::roflmao: That's ok Lori, I just haven't had any experience of males being that quick ;)

^Bragger! :grin01:

Well I have been happily married for 25 years :p

But seriously, Snakes, Cats, Dogs etc when I've witnessed them mating, all take much longer, so I'm unsure if Bobby has been successful. Then again, I suppose I'll know soon enough, as I believe they are only pregnant for just over three weeks. Time will tell :)

:laugh01::laugh01::laugh01:

Well, even though I have not witnessed your animals in action,(lol) I bred gerbils when I was younger. Typically it was a chase, two second connection, then the chase again. I certainly believe you will have babies in no time! :)

That's exactly what I've been seeing, chase, quick connection, chase, quick connection etc, you said it so much simpler than me :D Thank you!

You'll have more babies than you can shake a stick at! Prolific little buggers! Keep in mind they are prey items. They can't be wasting time with too much foreplay, etc. they could be eaten in the process. (no, Lori, I was not attempting any double meaning there):grin01:

The key is lordosis, the arched position the female rodent takes during the act. If she had her nose and tail end pointing to the sky, bingo! The female will assume the correct position if her hormones are making her receptive and fertile, it allows the male to penetrate successfully.

Ahah, that is what the girlies have been doing, pushing their belly to the floor, going bottom up and stretching their heads up, it's just sooooo quick. Thank you Janine :D

Hey, what is this bash the guys week. I'm starting to feel really picked on.

I wasn't picking on you, I luffs ya wade ;)

Coitus in rodents is extremely quick but happens multiple times, so what you're seeing are probably successful matings, especially since your girls are "assuming the position."

(Just by example, a typical rat mating has multiple intromissions (5-15) lasting .3-.6 seconds each, with 2-9 pelvic thrusts, and an ejaculation period of about 1 second. This will occur many times during their night of breeding.)

You can also check for formation of a vaginal plug (a mixture of secretions from the male's vesicular and coagulating glands) in the female after mating. It's not always obvious, but if it's there, you'll know the male got the job done.

Well, I've witnessed him doing this with all 3 of the girls now, the first one he chased is now starting to look like she's swallowed a golf ball, so I believe babies are expected soon. That was just over 2 weeks ago :)

The second one I witnessed him chasing and getting into position with, is starting to look plumper, that one was just over 1 week ago and the third one I think he caught this past Tuesday evening :)

It's funny because each time I've witnessed this behaviour, the actual positioning, it's been late on Tuesday evenings :shrugs:

Thanks for posting :)

I lol'd at this thread many times before I got to the end lol!

I was filming my gerbils being all cute...then suddenly the male was chasing the female and they had what I thought was the fastest quickie on earth! I was like O_O what just happened?

Have any of you ever witnessed rabbits in the act? the male actually literally falls over right after I useto breed netherlands and well they are only put together for a short amount of time and it was always as soon as I put the female in the males cage like I didnt have time to walk away to give em privacy so no I DIDNT intentionally watch!! but have to say it was very funny. Anyways Susielea Im just curious have your asf had babies yet?

ummm Opse I remember looking at that now. How are they going? my three females are on the second litter Ill have to take a picture.

That's funny, I was gonna remark how mice actually take longer than rats, but maybe that's because I keep my rats 2.5, and my mice 1.9 LOL
