This Season Is NOT Going As Planned.....at all...(vent)

Small update.....

Out of the 16 eggs Havoc laid on May 12, 13-14 still look good, 1 is collapsed and one has mold on it but is still plump.

On Sunday an (amazingly beautiful) adult female that I bought from Dean laid a second clutch of 12 eggs. He is holding her for me until the 08 I want from him is hatched and established. He told me to count those 12 eggs as one of my successes this year, as the snake is officially mine. Since its a second clutch, I know many of the eggs won't hatch. Plus since Dean owns the dad AND is incubating the eggs for me, I offered him half of whatever hatches. It's only fair. But I'm still very happy and excited about it!

And this morning Hatteras (normal multi het) laid 17 picture perfect eggs with no slugs, snowflakes or thin spots on the shells. Not bad for a first-timer!

And next year will be MUCH better!

That's great news about Hatteras' clutch! Carmen's second clutch isn't as impressive as I'd hoped. When I gave you my initial report, I'd only taken a quick look. There are probably really only about 5 or 6 good eggs. But you shouldn't be disappointed; I'll probably give you some nice stuff from her first clutch anyway. :)

5 or 6 is about 50%, and from what I've read from a few of KJUN's posts, that's about right for a second clutch.
And how can I be disappointed, Carmen is "da whole enchilada" :)

Yippy! Yahooee! Woot! Hazzah...and other excited noises. :)

Congratulations on a lovely clutch of eggies. Hoping these hatch out nicely. What are the parents for this one? Do we need to cross fingers for the long-shot hatchling?

Both parents are normals het for lavender, hypo and diffused and 50% possibly het for anery, charcoal and amel.

Well Joanna, about half of Carmen's second clutch are duds, but that's to be expected with a second clutch. I'm not horribly disappointed, and I still think that if anything hatches from it, Dean deserves half. Actually, he deserves alot more than that for selling Carmen to me in the first place! She is just breathtaking!

Thank you all for your well wishes!

Congrats!! Hopefully things will turn around for you. I, too, am having a crazy season (seems like a lot of people are!). Murphy is in a bad mood this year so far.

<------------*Off to do the "Make Murphy Happy" Voodoo Dance!!*

I'm not quite sure that is the 'norm'.....maybe averaging many clutches from many females together you would get a 50% rate but I've had many 2nd clutches that were 100% fertile. I've also had 100% slugs even when the first one was 100% fertile....although I see this less often. You do see a fair number of clutches with some fertile and some slugs but I'm not sure that is the general rule. I think it wholly depends on the individual snake. I have some females that will double and give 100% fertile every year and others that will never double and yet others that double but fertility is all over the board from year to year.

Thank you Jeff. I have very little experiance with double clutching, but would be THRILLED with 50% fertility on a second (unexpected) clutch. Even if 2 hatch from this one I would be happy (1 for Deano, 1 for meeeee) :)

So sorry to hear that you've been having a pretty rough year with your clutches... but glad that you have a few eggs to look forward to hatching. We've done ok here, but I've been stressing because all of our females have been taking 3-5 weeks longer than I thought they would to lay and after last year's prolapse mishap I'm paranoid about egg binding... though everyone who has laid has done so in less than a day and without any problems for now. *knocks on wood*

Thank you, Jen.
It's not been the season I was hoping for, but I should get a few pretty babies to keep me occupied!

Wow, so many are having a tough season. It makes me so sad for everyone going through some of the "bad breeding blues." Dean, your season seems to be a real heartbreaker. I'm so sorry.

Maybe old man Murphy is getting it out of his system this year, and next year will be fabulous beyond belief.

I've bred dogs and horses in the past, and I'm SO looking forward to being able to breed corns. Mine are all 07's, so that's down the road for me - unless I make some more purchases....always possible. However, as some have said, this thread is a reminder of how amazing and wonderful ANY breeding success really is. It's also a reminder of how challenging breeding can be, even with these so-called easy creatures.

Congratulations to those who are fortunate enough to have success.
