To breed or not to breed?

What does everyone think of just keeping corns as pets and not breeding from them at all? I got the impression when I was buying my corn that it was frowned upon, but I do find the idea of breeding from her quite daunting. If I am going to do it, I will have to get her a boyfriend pretty soon!

Why would that be frowned upon? In my opinion, corns are first and foremost a pet snake. THE pet snake. I think breeding just to be breeding ought to be frowned upon. If you don't have a goal, don't have specific babies you want to produce, don't have an outlet for both the high-end babies and the "byproduct" normals, amels, etc., then it's irresponsible to breed.

I have plenty of snakes that I will never breed, that are more treasured and special to me than the high-end prospective breeders.

That's a really odd idea - who told you that? I'd say the vast majority of Corns are "just" pets and are never bred from. It doesn't do them any harm to not breed - in fact it may prolong a female's life, as forming and laying eggs takes a lot of physical resources. A male might still go through the seasonal fast without mating, but that's perfectly normal once you get used to it.

By all means keep yours for the joy of it and don't give another thought to breeding if it doesn't appeal.

To be honest, at one point or another, most of us who do breed will find ourselves wondering why we put ourselves through it!

It was actually the owner of the shop I bought her from. He said that if I "cared" about my snake, I would breed from her. I've since found another shop in the area that sells snake stuff, so I don't really go in his place any more, since to be honest I was made to feel a bit uncomfortable when I was buying my corn. It was just that comment stuck in my mind.
Thanks for your advice, I was tending towards not breeding her, but I just wanted to do the right thing for the snake!

How strange. I bet he's one of those people who thinks your dog/cat needs to have a litter before you spay it, too.

And if a purebred female mates with a dog from another breed, or worse yet, a mutt, that she is completely ruined for life and can never produce purebred puppies again.

Some people just don't have a clue!

Personally...I think it is FAR less responsible to breed with no specific goal than it is to keep a snake for the pure enjoyment of keeping a snake. Corns are pets, first and foremost. Why anyone would classify them differently is beyond me.

It is your snake and your money. Damn anyone that tells you otherwise. Do as you see fit with YOUR new snake...and the best of luck to you FOR it!

I am not planning on breeding, or at least not planning to for few years... So i've got to agree with the overall opinion, there's NO reason to do it if you don't want to...
Very few animals actually enjoy mating, and many don't breed every year in the wild.

Don't worry about it. :)

That is flat out bizarre! I had a fleeting thought of breeding...then I read the how to's and the what can go wrongs here and elswhere.
I definitely think it is something best left up to those with the passion and the stomach for it. I cannot imagine trying to find 10 little lives (or more) good homes.

Sounds like what folks used to say about dogs...that really served the canine world well...take a peek at the shelters (and worse).

Nope, YOU are RIGHT...they are a fanatasitc pet! And that is where the enjoyment and confidence lies for me:dancer:
