I know, I know it's a little ealy to be thinking about summer. But it is destined to arrive.

I know my house gets up to 93 degrees in the dead heat of summer. I don't own an airconditioner. It only lasts for a couple of weeks mind you it seems to last for months.

I was wondering how you guys keep your snakes cool in the summer, or if you just let them suffer through it.
 
My house is getting up to 90 for a few hours in the afternoon right now! I don't know when I'm going to break down and turn the AC on, but I know I am not ready for a $200 electricity bill, either. I hope to make it partially through April, though, before I have to give in. Even though outside temps are in the mid-50's overnight, my house only cools down to 72F because I don't feel safe leaving the windows open when I am sleeping except for a couple small out of reach from the ground ones...

I think 94-95 inside temp is going to be the cut off. Grow, shade trees, grow!

Why not just place desk fans next to the enclosures? I know that keeps the temperatures down around here, not that it ever gets above 80 in Scotland LOL
 
Yeah, but in the wild they can find shade and burrow down under stuff to cool, moist earth.

You say moist earth, I think moist paper towel.
Do you think the snake would be fine just having its water dish to submerge in, and perhaps moist paper towels in the hide on the cold side of the tank?
 
thanks guys. I think I'll put in the moist hid even if she's not shedding. Do I have to worry about resurges when the temps get up?
 
My house was a balmy 91F when I got home at 5PM. My ex had even been over and opened a window! Only 81F in my bedroom which has a giant oak practically touching it on the south side, and it's on the east end of the house. Lucky Addy and Zee!

This is why I do not live in Florida.

That and the year round tick and flea season. :grin01:
 
I love it here. Except for the oak tree drove me in tonight when I'd have rathered been out reading on the patio, by peeing shriveled "flowers" all over me like it was snowing. Last week it dropped all its leaves en masse. But I am grateful for its shade and for being able to park four vehicles under it with room to spare. Who needs a garage?

I would have to say if my house got to be 90 degrees.,I wouldn't be worried about my snake....I would be DEAD !!! 90...INSIDE ??,thats insane :eek1:
 
A comfortable room temp to me is 78F. I was getting chilly with the windows open last night- I think it was 70 outside at the time...

You guys don't want to complain about the weather... In November it was -60 F here with the wind chill... and being on a field exercise (military) we had no choice but to be out in it...

And I'm STILL worried about it getting too hot her in the summer for my corn. Without a doubt it will hit +95 F in my house...
 
Once it consistently hits 80 or higher for several days, my window AC goes in the snake room. It doesn't cost all that much to run, and I know my snakes are well cooled, at least while the power is on.
 
Could you get a window AC or a small portable unit?

I used to go ice diving in the winter when I lived up north, (Minnesota) even when the air temp was -10F. The water stays the same- 32F. It feels warm.

I was thinking of getting a Window AC but I'd only really need it for two or three weeks. And I know if I had one I'd be using it more than that. :laugh:

If it was in the house my snake would move to my bedroom and I'd be sleeping at a wonderfull 70 degrees all summer. I have no restraint. If I own one I'm gonna use it. If I can do without it(for the snake) I'd prefer it that way.

Oh yes, I couldn't live in Florida either I'd die. My aunt lives in St Pete's Beach, I won't even consider visiting, unless it's the winter.
 
I second what DogStar said, I am also in Michigan. Once it hits 65 at least once the shorts come out and I where them to work everyday ( I deliver milk so I am outside almost all day long). I refuse to give in to the cold days after getting a taste of the warmth. 90 degrees inside is a little to warm for me, I have to have the AC on. If possible trying moving the snakes into a basement or a shady area of the house if that is not possible I like the fan idea.
 
Gorak, your in "Oil country" :grin01: You mean to tell me it will get hot enough out side to get it to 95 inside ?,,WOW
