Unfortunately, I had to rescue an amel today...

I don't know if this is where my post belongs - disclaimer! Sorry if it's in the wrong spot, I try my best.

Anyway... It was not as happy of a day that I was expecting it to be. So I've been looking for a striped corn just the last couple weeks or so, poking around, not too seriously because I don't have a lot of money at the moment. I find a CL posting in Portland for these hatchlings and you guessed it there's a striped amel in the bunch! The 'adoption fee' was $15, stellar deal, right? I proceed to do the CL thing and send an e-mail, etc.

I drove to NE Portland and met the woman who had posted the ad. Shortly after the conversation started I knew something was not right. For one, it was obvious she did not want me to go inside. Some people are protective over their space or private, I understand that. Then she brings out the hatchlings and all of their sheds are stuck and they looked too thin. There were 2 motleys and the striped amel. The little stripe had what looked like a kink. She has them on pine bedding! I was not about to leave the little ones so I bought the snake and left. Brought him over to the herp store and a very knowledgable store owner told me that it was not a kink. His bones are broken! This mixed with the stuck shed, plus the pine bedding has us both pretty worried about him.

Just got him back and all settled in. He's such a sweetie, not a tad nippy at all. I hope he makes it. I don't care about the aesthetic of a healed bone, as long as the little guy is healthy. Figured I would share with all of you, no pictures yet. It was a stressful day for him, so I will take some tomorrow and update this....

yeah, it is unfortunate. The little guy is not really moving around too much and it scares me. He's just hanging out in the middle of the tank, not hiding or anything, barely moving. I suppose that could just be part of his demeanor, but I keep checking in to make sure he's still with us. I've never had any health problems with my snakes, only an escape. Quite scary...

Oh yeah - I did want to ask if anyone had some suggestions? Like I said, I've never had to deal with a stuck shed or broken bones. I'm following the advice of the store owner right now - put him in a 'hot box' with wet paper towels for 20min twice a day, no substrate, plus a topical treatment (dermalone) 4 times a day for the bump where the worst break is.

That's just so sad--and infuriating. Why DO people allow such things to happen to their pets? I hope your little one makes it. Frankly, right now, it doesn't sound good. Perhaps he'll pull through, though, and make a comeback. I hope so!

I know just which ad you are talking about! How horrible that they were living like that... I'm glad you rescued the one who needed it the most, he must have been meant to be yours. :)

I would suggest keeping the little guy in the higher end of the temp gradient to accelerate his metabolism for a while.

This is so sad! Good for you for taking care of the little one.
If they were really so bad taken care of where they lived, is it maybe an idea to report them somewhere?

I want to report it, but the store owner told me that Portland doesn't have an ASPCA here... she also informed me that 'neglect' is not considered abuse? I was going to check into it today. She also told me that a petstore incubated the eggs for her. I was going to try to call and see if I could figure out which one.

So if you would neglect a dog or cat to the point that he is skinny and has broken bones, there would be nothing to be done? I find this hard to believe.
Maybe there are loopholes with reptiles, there sometimes are, but still, even if there's nothing to be done, a report means theyr name on paper somewhere, and that could be usefull for another case in the future.

Multnomah County has an animal control, as well as the Oregon Humane Society, both of which will investigate and confiscate animals if they deem them in unbearable situations. I'd contact them and get their opinions, or to make a complaint against the seller.

I will note, though, that what you and I might consider neglect or cruelty is often NOT what the law considers neglect or cruelty. The HS and Animal Control investigates and enforces the definition of the LAWS regarding cruelty and neglect, not necessarily our (or their) opinions of it.

As for pet stores that "might" incubate reptile eggs, best guesses are House of Reptiles in Tigard (SW 68th Parkway, I believe); All Heps Pets on McLoughlin; Rose City Reptiles, or the Tropical Hut, both on SE Division.

Yeah, I did some searching and got the number for Multnomah County animal control. It is Sunday, so I had to leave a message. Hopefully something will be done, but if not, at least it has been recorded. He is doing better today, looks more active and alert. The hot box has been helping, a lot of the skin has started to come off.

I doubt it was Tropical Hut if the issues arose at the store. I've personally gotten both my snakes from Tropical Hut at the reptile shows (they have a great selection and pricing). Both were healthy, happy, minimally flighty, and eat and shed like champs. They have staff on-hand that know a lot about corn care and genetics. I like them a lot!

I know for a fact that it wasn't Tropical Hut - that's where I took the little guy for help. They are so great, that's also where I got one of my corns. I assume that the store is probably in the NE, since that's where the person lives. I don't think that the issues arose at the store, I think that what happened was post-store. I would like to notify the store that this person they are incubating eggs for is not caring for the hatchlings appropriately.

What a very sad situation.:(
Truly hope all turns out okay for your new little one.
BTW Am sure it may not matter, to you, but he/she is not a Stripe ... 'tis a Motley (Striped version).

Yeah, I noticed that he was motley once all that skin started to come off. After seeing him today, I think he will be just fine. He's more alert and moving around, probably because that shed is giving way. Hopefully that break will heal up nicely!

Let me say right now that I only read the first post and the one with the photos.

No one MADE you rescue-- no, buy the snake. That was you're choosing; you could have left it. This wasn't a rescue, and paying the money will enable the breeders to do this again. It's great that you called animal control though. The corn is also looking pretty good; nice and alert. Hopefully it'll recover for you.
