I used just a bulb for the first month or two when I first got my corn (no uth). Now I use only a 40 watt over the cool side (ambient temps really low in here), but in the summer I'll be using just the UTH.
Belly heat is MUCH more important than a "basking spot" and the overall ambient temps don't need to be high. UTH's offer a floor space of 80-83 degrees which is MUCH better for proper digestion than a light that warms the air and substrate (remember if you're using a bulb, the substrate under a hide won't be as warm as around it).
UTH good. Heat lamp, not so good (but sometimes neccessary if the room is very cold).
