UTH not needed?

I used just a bulb for the first month or two when I first got my corn (no uth). Now I use only a 40 watt over the cool side (ambient temps really low in here), but in the summer I'll be using just the UTH.

Belly heat is MUCH more important than a "basking spot" and the overall ambient temps don't need to be high. UTH's offer a floor space of 80-83 degrees which is MUCH better for proper digestion than a light that warms the air and substrate (remember if you're using a bulb, the substrate under a hide won't be as warm as around it).

UTH good. Heat lamp, not so good (but sometimes neccessary if the room is very cold).

Your corn definately needs an UTH for proper thermoregulation. There are many on the market today. As for a light, all you will need is day light that can put on timer (12hrs on 12hrs off). I wouldn't give any business to that store if they're telling you stuff like that. Take your business elsewhere to people who are actually knowledgeable and if you have more questions please post them and take a look and print out a few cornsnake caresheets.

Absolutely not true. None of my corns have a UTH.

I would recommend using a UTH with any animal.. maybe not Rhac geckos and what not but snakes..thats a big 10-4

Nice? yes; Necessary? no

If you live in the southern US, heat isn't necessary for keeping North American colubrids. I have actually observed increased feeding response and general levels of activity when temps are below the accepted normal ranges of 80-83F.

Remember, this hobby is an art, not a science. ;)

What are the temps in your house? I see you live in Florida. Doesn't that make a difference?

BTW, I have UTH under all my tanks.

The use of any external heating source is totally dependent on the ambient temps in YOUR home. i live in north central florida and I have to use a UTH to get the temps up to 80. there are times when i have to use a black light bulb also to maintain the low 80 temp
