My wife and I spend a vacation week in the Charleston / Edisto area
every year. I love the low SC Low Country and the beaches down there.
Also love walking around down at Edisto Island because of the abundance
of Snakes, gators, and lizards down there. We were there week before
last, and got a lot of pictures of reptiles / amphibians life in the Edisto,
Charleston and Ace Basin area. Just Sharing the expericance:

Large Gator that stays in the Recreation area

And my favorite. A pretty big Cottonmouth that was crawling in some small
Palmetto Palms. This was taken at the entrance of the Earnest F. Hollings
Mem. Park on the Ace Basin

I look forward to your photos every year. Some day I hope Rich and I can get up there for a visit!!

Great photos and thanks for sharing - I wonder if that cottonmouth enjoyed his nice belly massage from the sharp edges of that palm tree :)

NICE finds! Just got back from some hiking in Congaree where I was able to pick up some cottonmouths and 3 species of other water snakes. Love SC low country...even though Congaree is not exactly low country...but it is close. ;)

Thanks for sharing!

That's a nice variety. I like that little Yellow Rat too!

I actually picked it up and held it for a short time before letting it go
and snapping the pictures. I wish we had Yellow Rat Snakes in the
midlands and upstate. They're beautiful snakes and this one at least
was not aggressive. It didn't want to be held, but never attempted to
bite or musk like Black rats and Corn snakes I've tried to pick up before.

This year was especially enjoyable. We didn't get to go last year because
of some emergencies in the family, and some unexpected bills that came up,
so after going down almost every year since the early 90s, this one was
extremely well received. Most of the time we ride into Charleston a lot, but
this year we wanted to stay more on the Island and check out some of the
points around the Ace Basin. It turned out to be one of the better weeks
I've spent down there.

Great photos and it looks like it was an excellent trip!

I think he was just mainly trying to stay out of site of me and the
camera !

I live just a few miles from there, but in the 10 years I've lived in Columbia
I haven't been out there. I've rode around some of the roads / trails around
the perimeter of the area, but it's on the list of things I'm going to do this
summer. Hopefully within the next few weekends. Walking around some of
those trails a couple of weeks ago has made getting out to the Congaree
a priority now.

If you guys make it up there, make sure to check out the Edisto Serpentarium.
It's one of my favorite places in the state of SC. There's a family named
Clamp that run the site, and they have devoted their lives to capturing
and studying snakes, gators and turtles. The Serpentarium is a top notch
facility and they are in the process of expanding it now. The outdoor
exhibits are fantastic and contain snakes that Ted and Heywood clamp
capture down there on the island.
