viv type question

tsst

Deuce is watching!
Does anyone use the upright type of viv with front doors? How do you like it? Any escape issues? Kind of like this one...

I wouldn't put a corn in that sort of viv. Floor space is more important that height. Although that is a somewhat attractive viv, I would much rather spend my money on a nice wooden or glass viv with lots of floor space.

I was thinking of building my own after I get back from vacation. Would be maybe 2 feet wide x 1.5 feet deep x 2 feet tall. Would that be large enough for adult corn? Most 30 gal aquariums aren't much bigger foot print wise (13"x30"x18").

3x1x1 would be ideal. More length, less height :) I rack my adults in 50 and 64ltr tubs, they are quite high (10/11') and I rarley see the adults use the height. The 50ltr is lower and more space efficient.

The minimum size for an adult corn is a 20 gallon tank, 30" x 12" x 12", but if your building the enclosure build it bigger for the snake's sake. A little extra space will do a lot of good for the snake. They'll have a little more roaming space, get a little more exercise, and maybe have a little more fun in a larger enclosure. I keep my snakes in 20 gallon tanks but bigger is better.

2 feet by 18 inches is close to the same area as the 20 gallon, but I'd make it bigger, maybe 3' by 18". That will comfortably house a corn for it's whole life, but as a hatchling you will need to give the snake lots of hides and fake plants or other cover to make the small snake feel safer in a large tank.

Is length most important? 12"x30"= 360 sq in of floor space, 24"x18"= 432 sq in of floor space.

I would rather have length than depth to be honest. I don't "boxy" enclosures. I see my snakes stretched out along the whole length of their tubs most of the time...

It is slightly easier to get a warm side and a cold side with a longer enclosure, but really floor area is all that matters. Still, I would opt for a slightly longer/larger tank. in the end as long as the snake has enough space (your plan does give enough space) it's your choice.

I want whats best for snake. I am going to tweek plans a bit. Maybe 36"x 18"x 18". Thanks for all input.

My boa is in a reptarium a lot like that. Actually, it's one of these:
http://www.exo-terra.com/en/products/glass_terrarium.php

I believe it's the 18inX18inX18in version. It has a screen top with holes at the back for electrical cords and it came with the styrofoam "rock" background.

It is definitely not an appropriate viv for a corn, especially a young one. Mine came free with two yearling corns that I got from Craigslist, but I promptly put them into a better containment system and set up this one for a boa. The corns would crawl up the back between the background and the glass, and they would have gotten out the electrical holes if the previous owner hadn't plugged them up with wads of paper. It was an escape waiting to happen.

Save your money and buy something that's not so tall. Corns aren't major climbers (obviously there are some exceptions, but not many), so the vertical space is wasted.

If you've already bought it, that's okay too. Just put the corn in something else and buy yourself a nice fat boa to go in the reptarium. :D

Tsst, see my sig for viv plans. You obviously don't have to use them, but they may give you an idea or two for the viv you plan to use.

Thanks blueapplepaste. I started today on mine. It will be pretty much a long version of the link texastailfeathers posted here. I got all the 1/4" lexan cut today. I will get wood this week for framing it all in. It will have two doors in front and an opening screen top. Final size will be 18" high x 18" deep x 36" long. I plan to use poplar hard wood for frame but most of wood will be external the snake will mainly be in basically a lexan tank. all will hing and latch firm and tight. I will try and post a pic here after it is done. May be a couple weeks getting it complete after work. Thanks all!

Final size will be 18" high x 18" deep x 36" long.

That is the same size as a 40 gallon breeder tank. They have a tank out by Rzilla that has a latching screen lid. I house my corn in it and she loves it. It has plenty of floor space and even some space for climbing, which mine uses regularly. I think I got the exception to the rule. She has always loved being up near the top. I think you and your snake will be very happy with this size enclosure. And you have doors on the front. We are so jealous!

Well here is the new viv. To paraphrase Mastercard ... wood $25, paint $4, screws $3, building with 9 yr old son PRICELESS! It may not be the piece of work I had in mind but let him paint and help sand, etc made it special no matter what. Like he said it's our snake maybe we should both build it. Tough to argue with that. One thing i wish we had done different would be to paint frame before installing lexan so it would look black from inside too. We picked window style latches because they tighten as you turn more. Everything closes tight enuff a hatchling would not have a prayer of getting out. Here is the pic.
