Rich, I wish that I could give you some Rep for that. Extremely well said!
My brother is in the Navy and asked me a couple of days ago what I thought of the situation with N.Korea, and if I thought their missiles could reach the mainland of the U.S. I told him that I have never heard of them getting this close to actually sending nukes our way, and that from that I know of what missiles they have, they would be able to hit the west coast, but not much farther inland. He went on to tell me that my assumption of their capabilities was correct, but that our defense system would be able to take out the missiles before they ever hit land.
My only issue with that statement from him was that the defense system that he is talking about has only ever been used in test scenarios, where they know exactly what the target of the "enemy" missile is, and keep it on a steady trajectory. I am worried that it hasn't been tested with variables thrown in the mix. Because it seems (from the equipment that my unit received overseas) that the military only tests things so much before fielding them as "good to go".
The equipment I speak of is some new trucks that were sent to my EOD unit, in which we had to pull seats out and build shelves for, because we are not infantry, and the military saw fit to have infantry test our EOD trucks... Never asked the guys who were going to use the vehicles about what we needed in them... 8 seats and no storage is not conducive to transporting 30-80 lbs of high explosives at any time, for IED calls... Not to mention the robots and bomb suits....
But, that is only my experience with the military doing "testing" on something and then fielding it. The missile defense system may have been tested differently, though I doubt it.
