Weird Blood . . . New Pics

Here's some new pics of the weirdo Blood girl I hatched out. Still very little color coming in on that head! Even my wife (who pays little attention to the snakes) commented on why "that one has such a white head?" !!! The sides are filling in nicely, but lot's of black speckling throughout the body. Gives it a really different look. The silver (miami-ish) background is filling in. :shrugs:

She's hatched out completely different from any of her clutchmates. Here's a holdback full sibling male:

The bloods (and hypo bloods) with the palest/whitest heads TYPICALLY turn out to be the best looking bloodreds (most diffuse) ones. That one definitely has promise! Good luck!

Yes, yours would be from the same clutch.

That's what is so intriguing about this girl. She has lost virtually none of that gray head to date. The dabs of color you can see on it so far have been there for a while now. All her siblings have fully colored heads except for the two streaks of gray in the male. Her coloring/stipling is different than her clutchmates as well. I'm not saying this is something new by any means, she's just completely different than any of her clutchmates. :shrugs:

Here's a shot of when she first hatched: (She almost looked anery.)

Here's after that first shed: (Just the slightest shade of pink on the side and maroon saddles.)

That black peppering or stipling throughout her body hasn't faded away so it gives the coloration and pattern just this odd color. Her background was staying silverish for the longest time, but that's finally starting to disappear, but the head is staying silver. Definitely intriguing, and I can't wait until next Spring after she's put on another year's worth of growth and change. I know that will make a big difference.

Brent, looks like you got one of those 1 in 64th chances snakes. Human skin color is controlled by a multitude of genes, this is definitely true of cornsnakes, but perhaps more than we think. Instead of thinking of bloodred / diffused gene as either there or not there we should think of it in degree of presence.

Seems like that girl's genes are aligned in just the right way! Interesting head, thanks for the picture update.

That's interesting because I've been thinking there/not there. Maybe it is just there/not there but masked to different degrees by other gene combinations?

She's a very cool bloodred, Brent. And while the grayest-headed blood hatchlings do usually turn out to be among the best in terms of diffusion, usually the gray is mostly replaced by red by the time the snake reaches her age. Something strange IS going on with her. Something new, or a one-off? I dunno. As you stated, her overall look is different from her sibs. It reminds me of some of Rich's Keys corns.

To illustrate the gray-head-turning-red thing, here is a very gray-headed striped blood of mine as a hatchling, and at about your girl's age, and now (she's an '06).

Believe it or not Brent I was going to ask you for an update on the "Grey" Bloodred you hatched last year. Very strange. Do you have any idea as to what caused this strange mutation? The diffusion on that girl is incredible. If I had seen that thing pip I would have sworn it was an Anery Bloodred. That head is crazy.

No idea whatsoever! All I know is that she's different and will either get bred to her brother or back to her dad . . . when she makes it to breeding size, surpassing Murphy and his wiley ways . . . :sidestep:

I did . . . completely . . . but there was a slight salmon pink coloration under that "in-blue" skin so I wasn't holding my breath!

Well, she's not old enough yet that I can declare she's going to keep it! There's a tad bit of red creeping in and a lot can happen in the next 12 months or so, but yeah, I'd have to agree that it would be hot if she kept it!!
