Gamaliel's Principle
Yep,...they've been doing it for many many years. At several locales. Not that that is an excuse, but old 'traditions' in communities die hard. Incidentally, in Lake Providence, Louisiana, they have a "Snake Rodeo" every summer, and shoot/hook/kill/collect every serpent in and around the lake. They have prizes for most snakes, most poundage, most poisonous snakes, and largest snake, etc., etc.,...Hey, them "shineys" are only about the cost of one normal, no hets, cornsnake hatchling. Get yerself a shiny! Support the site, AND get editing privileges!
BTW, I don't go in at ALL for rattlesnake roundups. I believe they've been going on for decades, and I've never liked the thought of mass kills of anything (except mosquitos or somesuch.
Hey...don't shoot the messenger.
Yeah, Mike I wince every time I see news about those "roundups".In the UK the rattle snake round up is viewed the same as Spanish bull fighting, Turkish dancing bears and Chavs dog fighting...
Pretty barbaric to kill and maim animals for fun...
I don't know it if they show it on the video or not, Lexie, but there are certain towns that even use gasoline through tubes to flush rattlesnakes (and other accidentals) out of deep holes and crevasses. IMHO, introducing gasoline into a healthy ecosystem is even more of an abomination.
But, I must say, eating the snakes and harvesting the venom does placate me somewhat. There has been work with venom, as well as anti-venom, from Miami (google Bill Haast) to Dallas to Los Angeles, and elsewhere.
And on a variety of conditions from anaphylaxis to Multiple Sclerosis, the latter of which my grandmother had and baby sister has.
Rodeo and Roundup may not be the most agreeable/PC words, but one can't change the world in a day. In fact, IMHO, we have our hands full right now with defending and preserving the integrity and and longevity of our hobby/industry. We can change the rodeos and roundups, hopefully with the natural assistance of the passage of time and the evolution of the human mind, more successfully from standing on a solid foundation as a 'community' ourselves.
