You want a green snake? There's all kinds to choose from!

Have you ever thought about Asian rat snakes?
Whenever I think of a GREEN type snake, I always think of the Arizona Green Rat Snake. VERY KEWL looking snake. I gotta go and catch me one, one day. LOL.

Here's a link to see one...Arizona_Green_Rat_Snake.

What do you think???

Well folks since 2009 is around the corner, here is my list. That will be filled in 2009.
5. Black Milks
4. Black Tailed Cribos.
3. Amazon Tree Boas
2. Black Pines
1. Pacific or aka New Guinea Tree Boas. I got to hold a pair thanks to the Snake Guru and fell in love with them. I am planning and hoping to get a pair or trio next year.

well so far, I havent touched this list..

I am just getting things around it.
So far I added and picked up
A Macklotts python (this was on the SO's want list for a long time)
A pair of Blood Red corns
A pair of Adult MBKs.

My list is fairly short, we'll see how this goes:
1. MBK
2. Hognose (maybe)

So much for self control, I've already purchased two snakes this year, neither of which was on my list! I've got a female chocolate king, and a male mexican rosy boa. I'm still not sure about the hognose, they are SO cute, but I'm worried they may be too difficult for me to properly care for.

....corns and ratsnakes are not the same. They used to be in the same family, but have since received different designations. Cornsnakes are now in the Pantherophis family, not the Elaphe family any longer. They are similar, but have different makeup.

Depends on who you talk to....

  • Utiger, Helfenberger, Schatti, Schmidt, Ruf & Ziswiler (2002 Russian Journal of Herpetology 9(2): 105-124), using mtDNA, presented evidence that North American Rat Snakes of the genus Elaphe are a monophyletic lineage different from Old World members of the genus, and resurrected the available name Pantherophis Fitzinger for all North American (north of Mexico) taxa. Those adopting this generic name for the Western Rat Snake should be aware that spelling of the specific name changes to obsoletus.
  • Burbrink & Lawson (2007 Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution 43: 173-189), using DNA evidence, placed this species in the genus Pituophis.
  • Collins, Joseph T. & Travis W. Taggart (2008. An alternative classification of the New World Rat Snakes (genus Pantherophis [Reptilia: Squamata: Colubridae]). Journal of Kansas Herpetology 26: 16-18) resurrected the generic name Scotophis for this species. Standard common name remains Western Rat Snake
So, for the ratsnake it was Elaphe, then Pantherophis, then Pitupohis and now Scotophis.

For cornsnakes, it went from the same Elaphe to Panterhophis to Pitupohis back to Pantherophis.

So...who knows where it may go and what will really be the final name for the snakes. In fact, one group thinks corn snakes should still be Elaphe.

Scientific and Standard English Names of Amphibians and Reptiles of North America North of Mexico: Update. Herp. Rev. 34: 196-203.

What do I want for 2009? Well, everything. :)
Unfortunately due to finances I'm going to have to be modest this year. I want to branch out from corns and get a western hognose. Possibly a king as well. We'll see!
