What morph should we be looking for?

My daughter has finally worn my husband and I down, so after much researching it seems like a corn is a reasonable way to go. Since she will be taking it to college and beyond, we want to be sure she gets the color she wants. We've been looking at all the morphs, but so many of the pictures seem to be of hatchlings. I am afraid to pick a morph based on a hatchling picture only to have it shed into a color she isn't as fond of once the snake is an adult. For example, I did find hatchling and adult pictures for snows, and wild she loves the pink hatchling, she did not like the yellow and white adult at all!

So... She loves the pictures of Orchids (sun kissed lavender), but are they really pink and purple like that? As adults? I know, such a girl, though clearly not so much as the pet she has chosen is a snake.

She also liked strawberry snow and coral snow, though for the latter peach is ok, but she's not as fond of orange.

Basically pink, purple, or grey would be ideal. She'd like to avoid reds, oranges, browns, and yellows. What morphs would you recommend looking at?

Try lavenders, aneries, and snows. Some of these photos I've seen have super pink corn snakes. You'll find something pretty.

Welcome to the forums. Corn snakes offer an amazing palate of color to choose the exact snake you want! Also, they are great reptile pets for responsible kids. I would suggest maybe looking into a yearling or young adult if you want to be sure the snake won't change into something she doesn't like as much. Also, an older corn is much easier to handle and is far less fragile.

For pinks, there are a number of snow corns that do pink very well -however, they generally don't start pink (here's a thread demonstrating how much they can change http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=132996). Anery corns, charcoals, and lavender do the gray to purple scale. Lavenders have a reputation for hatching small and being challenging babies, and my experiences have supported this. I would certainly suggest an older animal if a beginner was buying a lavender. Orchids are breathtaking, be aware that sunkissed have a reputation for being high strung, nervous corns; and my experiences are limited with this mutation, but have also supported this. Orchid is sunkissed and lavender. You may well get a calm, strong, hardy orchid with a great appetite out of the egg, but that would probably not be a mutation I would suggest to someone for their first pet.

Look into the snows and anerythristics. Snows are white and I think as adults have a little bit of yellow. Anerythristics come in many pretty shades of gray. I personally love the anerythristics because their eyes are a beautiful blue.

I agree with Chip, there are lots of awesome snows that will develop hot pinks as they mature. There are also coral ghosts, which are gray and pink, and some of my favorite!

Coral Ghost was actually on her list as well, and I noticed the color variations I was seeing online weren't as pronounced for that morph as well. I'll see about moving in that direction, and steering away from Orchid for now at least. Been reading as much as I can, but I hadn't come across the mention of temperament issue with orchids yet. Thank you all for the input, it's invaluable!

This may be a topic for a different section of the forum then, but... I had wondered about the hatchling versus older snake thing. My gut said an established previously handled snake might be a better choice, but despite living in a major city pickings have been pretty slim. Big chain LFS has a really aggressive corn in some form of red, and smaller LFS can order a decent selection of morphs, though none of her top 3 (orchid and the two snows). Smaller LFS will do a test feed and allow refusal if you order it in and it doesn't feed or handle well, or appear as it should in any way, so I was considering going that route.

I wish she liked the straight snow corns better, there's a 5 year old nice looking corn on my local CL looking to be rehomed. Based on pics/description posted with him, he handles well, too.

Thanks for the great suggestions. If you have any more or anything else I should be researching, please let me know!

You don't need to buy local unless you want to! There are so many wonderful corn snakes of all ages on the forums here. :)

Can older corns be safely shipped? For some reason I was under the impression only hatchlings ship well.

If she's against the yellow I personally would say to stay away from anery as they do tend to have yellow down the sides of the neck similar to the snows.
Something on that grey scale that doesn't yellow out is a Charcoal or a Pewter, they are absolutely beautiful IMO (I also am not a huge fan of the yellow unless its something with Caramel genes where it's got a lot of yellow)
Coral Ghosts are beauties too though, but they can brown out a bit and some do develop the yellow on the sides of the neck.
Lavender and Orchids are also very pretty too and sound like they may suit her preference.
I suggest looking on here for a great new pet for her, there are many extremely wonderful breeders here who can safely ship the snake to you regardless of distance (I'm in Western Canada and had MANY snakes shipped here successfully with no problems from as far as Florida). These breeders are very helpful and supportive if you need any help or have questions also.

Good luck on your search, I hope she finds herself a great new pet! :)

Hmmn, glad the shipping thing came up! Her tank is almost set up, will check in with another thread to make sure we have everything there, but in the mean time sounds like we can be browsing the sale board! Thanks again.

Lol, that's the site she first saw orchid and fell in love. That site is a bad influence. :p

The temperament thing still concerns me, but in theory buying from breeders on here they would have handled them and could offer some decent direction on emerging behavior so far.

I guess I'd recommend a coral snow from Dave Partington, if she wants a really pink snake.

A peppermint (amel cinder) would be a nice pink and white snake.

I like plasmas, (lavender bloodred) or hypo lavender stripes for nice purple snakes. the hypo lavender stripe males are pink and purple as adults. If you find a colorful one.

Snakes are simple to ship.

I know Walter Smith had some of his really really pink snows on his table last month in B-ham. Might wanna chat him up. We got one from him last year.....Here is a quick pic

We hatched some coral ghost this season but we are waiting to put them for sale until we see how pink they might be :)
