So today was Vesper's feeding day and instead of striking and coiling and then eating like normal, she struck, coiled and then immediately turned on me (standing a good four feet from the counter) and hissed. I called Sheldon upstairs to watch how aggressive she was being. So far she has been a sweetheart, so it was a shock to see her so angry. Sheldon reached for his soda - she struck as soon as it was in his hand and he pulled his hand back so hard, the soda soaked both him and our kitchen floor. :laugh::nyah: Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of him, but here are a few I was brave enough to take! Thanks for looking!

LOL! It's cute when a baby corn turns hateling, but quite another when a good-sized boa does it! I can imagine what Vesper is saying..."Go ahead! Touch my ratty! I DARE you!"
 
I suggest you get used to it :)
Boas react with ferocity the moment food is involved and will remain high strung for a few minutes(around 10-15).
I find that females are more prone to this food-aggression.... but it's common enough for both genders.
 
They sure can hiss loud can't they?
The first time I saw a boa do this, I almost peed myself.
Vesper sure is pretty, but I don't think I'd mess with her while she's eating, ROFL.
 
I have to cover my female boa's tank once she gets her rat or she will continue bang her head striking at me instead of eating... crazy snake! lol
 
oi there's a slight exeggeration here- they react no differently from many colubrids/pythons when they are hungry... They are simply bigger so they require a tad more care is all... they settle down pretty fast... and mine do not bang against the viv... if it's not their feeding day and they smell something yummy they may see a large warm mass(me) and try to grab it- thus getting a wake up call from the glas...

but it's not so extreme that it should make people reconsider Boas altogether.

I think it's funny & it certainly wouldn't stop me from owning a boa. I mean, they aren't venomous so if I get tagged it will hurt, but I've been bitten by enough cats & dogs I am not worried that my boa would do more damage than that.

I like the food enthusiasm thing, so "My rattie, MINE all MINE!" is amusing.

Yea she is definitely more aggressive at feeding time than Optimus. He has tagged me in the past but it was before he had his mouse, but he could taste it in the air and went into feeding mood while I still was holding him.

:rofl: I knew she was going to be a tad more aggressive than our male when, the first time I fed her, she coiled - immediately let go and just stared at me for fifteen minutes. Best part was, as soon as she got the mouse down, she turned back into the sweetheart I've come to know. :)

Oh come on! I have a baby Okeetee that's far meaner than Vesper girl. AND he's unpredictable - mean ALL the time. :)

In all seriousness, I can see how boas aren't everyone's cup of tea. 8-10ft was mildly alarming at first - just imagine if she doesn't grow out of being so possessive! :sidestep:

Pretty much my reaction. Thanks! I don't plan on doing anything other than putting her in her feeding box and leaving the mouse there from now on. Not only will she appreciate it, maybe it won't take an hour and a half for her to decide to stop hissing at inanimate objects and eat her food. (I can't tell you how terrified I was that she was going to refuse to eat it because it got cold by the time she decided to put her mouth on it.)

Thank you, Robbie! I'm sure 'MINE' was one of the many things running through her pretty little head while she was sizing me up.

Thanks, Fred! I have no doubt she'll be quite a handful when she feels like it. (Unless it's time to watch a movie, then she's perfectly okay with cuddling in my lap under the blanket). BTW - speaking of handfuls, how is Koko doing?

Sorry, I somehow missed your post! It's pretty entertaining to watch our Okeetee baby hate us, but you're right - a 27 inch snake is a force to be reckoned with!
 
He he I got a taste of my Lunch when mean the other day too. He also struck coiled and then flew out at me for the first time. Their cute with tude though while he always hisses he's never actually went after me:)
 
Lucky so far, eh? Vesper didn't even waste time hissing at first -more like a strike first, ask questions later.

:) I feel like I'm insulting her when I laugh, but she is just too cute when she's being scary!

Koko is fine, thank you! Just wondering when her friends Sheldon and Katie will come by to visit! LOL.

She's a little passive these days... she knows it is winter time (even though we keep her warm). LOL.
