Black rat snakes?

I'm wondering the same things...I've got a couple corns and ball pythons and think I'd be interested as well.

Just a warning..check your state DNR site. In some states it's illegal to own native species such as black rats. Except for morphs such as albino black rat. They are a beautiful snake though. ;)

I just found out that in New Mexico, I have to have a permit to own more than 5 corn snakes..... I spoke to someone at Game and Fisheries about it and they said a way around it is to keep a receipt in a folder and if I ever get rid of the snake to hand the receipt to the next person... I was thinking, what about if I breed them??? I know people with more than 20 corns out here. its not like they actually search houses for these things, I just know now that if I ever get caught with more than 5 I will have to provide proof of purchase...lol.

The Tennessee Wild life Resources Agency says: "In Tennessee, it is illegal to harm, kill, remove from the wild, or possess native snakes taken from the wild without the proper permits"(good law). If it is captive breed it is probably not illegal. If even captive breed is illegal then it is theoretically illegal for me to own my normal corn snake(it is a native snake here). I doubt all of the pet stores here are breaking the law selling corn snakes since I believe they are regulated by our local department of agriculture. I will inquire with the TWRA and find out what their stance is on keeping captive breed rat snakes.

Didn't mean to offend you if I did. My post was merely meant to inform. It's good you know your states laws about native species but truth is, some people don't.

After I lost Harry, my first black rat snake, I simply had to get another, so at Daytona '08, I picked up Freddie, a white-sided black rat. He was already well established and a good size and has been growing like a weed ever since. I find these guys to be extremely amusing, always more interested in me and what I'm doing than in exploring whenever I take them out. They seem to move a bit slower than corn snakes, IMO, and are very mellow...except when it comes to dinner.

You did not offend me in fact I am grateful for the heads up on state law. When I posted about black rat snakes I really had not given the law question any thought. Since I last posted on this I have discovered some troubling things about TN law and keeping snakes. Lets put it this way I think a lot of people are in violation of the law and don't know it. The TWRA must look the other way especially when it comes to pet stores and they make no distinction between captive domesticated and wild caught species no matter what the wording of the law is. :uhoh:

That is how NM is with the cornsnakes, which is why the Game and Fish people told me to keep a receipt of purchase near the tank in a folder. To prove that it is CB and not WC. I can keep up to 5 WC corns without having to get a license.

Where does that put the snakes you breed? How is it you prove (in theory, if you had to) that the snakes you have are ones you "made" yourself? Mama snake doesn't exactly give reciepts when she gives birth...lol
I'm just curious. The laws here are very lax, there's hardly any restrictions. A few local ones, regional not province wide, and they're mostly about turtles and the Giant snakes.

That is what I would like to know myself... The rules around here are pretty dumb...

They have found 2 grey banded king snakes in New Mexico in the past 10 years and instead of thinking that maybe they are expanding their natural area, they knee jerk into thinking that "OMG they are going extinct in NM" which is why it is illegal to have those guys without paying out the butt for permits...

I haven't heard of any WC corns in NM or stories of anyone ever seeing wild ones here, but apparently the state thinks that they are native to NM even though I am pretty sure it gets too cold for the little guys here. That is why we can only have 5... It is pretty annoying to say the least.
