Corn Snake Tattoo Design

I've been agonizing over the design of my first tattoo for a year now, and I think I've finally nailed it. Still needs to be cleaned up and finished in ink and colour, but here is the design thus far.

"Ariadne Stealing the Sun":

I wanted a tattoo that represented Ariadne and I wanted it to be my own drawing. The inspiration came from my father who is a carver. His carving is strongly influenced by Native American styles, and one of my favourite pieces of his is based on the Haida legend of the raven stealing the sun to bring light to the world. Ariadne is a Leo (and my father's favourite snake), so the solar theme fit and I borrowed his carving design for the sun.

Haley, that design is FANTASTIC! I may ask you to do one for me at some point! Do you take commissions yet? If you don't, you should.

I really like the idea and the head, but I think I would make the curvings more realistic, on the insides of the curve I see lines going upwards and just ending, and (I think accidentally) they fit the lines of the pattern so for me it's confusing and would irritate me. The bending showing the checkers is not natural either. I these slight faults are caused by the snake body not being 3D. Maybe you don't want it to look really realistic, but from the really beautiful head I think you want to.

Or I'm just a loonie not getting it :p

I would love to! And thanks for the compliment.

I appreciate you taking the time to share your input. I intentionally take artistic license with anatomy for the sake of playing with style, pattern and design. For example, the bend of the tail is unnatural, but I wanted to include the bold, black checkered pattern near the bottom of the drawing to balance the thick, dark lines on her face. That was a design-related decision, not an accident. Also, when you're looking at it, keep in mind that it's going to be much smaller as a tattoo! More detail/realism will be lost as my arm is just too darn skinny to accommodate it.

Ah, I couldn't imagine you really wouldn't see these things indeed. And it will be less visible indeed in a smaller size. How large is it going to be?

I'm planning for it to go on the inside of my forearm, so it will be fairly small. I won't have the money together to get it done until November most likely, so I have lots of time to play around now that I have the basic design figured out.

Alright, I've finalized my design! Now to get my money together for the finished product.

I'm thinking this is about the size it will be on my arm, if anyone is curious:

I'm also wondering what you guys think of this one. It's a doodle of my Rosy Boa, and everyone who has seen it (including a couple of anonymous strangers) immediately said "TATTOO!". If I'm not a total wuss getting the first one done, do you guys think this design should be next? It needs to be cleaned up and scanned properly of course, but here it is thus far:

Wow those are really good. Are you going to leave them like that or get color put in?

The corn snake will be my first tat and although it is small, there's a lot of detail going on, so we'll see how big of a wimp I turn out to be before I start thinking about colour

I'm definitely going to colour the original picture and post it as well, just to see how it would look.

That rosy doodle would make a good tattoo. It would probably hurt less than the other one. The corn is neat, though. You did a real good job drawing it!

Love the final cornsnake design and the rosy is awesome! I don't think, though, that it will work well as small as you want it. I'm sure your tattoo artist will work with you on that.
