My Corn Is "Potty Trained"

Ok, those are your snakes. But why does every care sheet state, you shouldn't handle a snake before or after feeding? There's gotta be a reason.

Probably because they are made for beginners and are being conservative. I've also found enough misinformation in care sheets to fill a book.

For what it's worth, I agree with your broader assertion that reptiles don't particularly care for human contact, and try to avoid Anthropomorphism when it comes to them. They do seem intelligent enough to adapt to repeated routines that cause them no harm.

You are running up against the wall stating that handling is always stressful and trying to defend an opinion as an indisputable fact. You'd probably be better served by admitting that may have been a bit of an overstatement, and letting it go from there

I have said 3 or 4 times now, handling once a week seems fine, more than that seems to stress snakes. And most reptiles don't like human contact, I seriously don't handle my snakes more than say once every 10 days or so. I don't have any issues ever. And I have touchy Asian Ratsnakes.

Kind of hard to defend yourself with a broken link.

Once again, this is a discussion forum and thread about CORN SNAKES not Asian Ratsnakes. You wanna talk about Asian Ratsnakes then go to a forum and thread about them. Stop trying to saying that ALL snakes are the same. It simply isn't fact, it's just your opinion.

YOU'RE REACHING!

Alright folks, enough is enough. I stayed away from this thread simply because"potty-training" a snake, IMO, is bordering on the realm of fantasy. It has ended up with multiple members behaving like children and at least one reported post. All this bickering about who has more experience than who, which person has the better knowledge, this one is rude, that one is out-spoken, etc., etc., etc... I listen to my two children, ages 13 and 11, brother and sister, bicker with each other and it's exactly the same as what is going on in this thread. Makes me glad I'll be getting away from that stuff here on this forum for a few days. I can always spank my children and send them to bed when they behave this way.

PS - David, your link is bad...404 Error - Page Not Found.

Yes, and you've also made several glaring overstatements and those are what I was trying to politely address with you.

Rather than go back and pull the quotes, I'm just going to let you have the last word. You're too busy trying to "right fight" and not hearing anything...

Regards,
Scott

Susan- Even though I think I was very well behaved, I apologize if you were trying to shut this thread down. Your post was not up when I went in to reply and I didn't see it until afterward...

Scott

PS- You can spank me too ;)

My heart and soul will be there.
But I hope you guys do the ""live feed"" like last year of the dinner raffle.

Well, I don't know if Taylor will be there, and Robbie has another engagement that night. He has to emcee for the auction, and can't be at the dinner. Those were the 2 guys that did it last year as I recall.

Hey I heard that. I hope someone can step up.
But who could replace the Robster!!!! lol

I think Autumn is doing it. I think she will be quite good.

But I will miss Robs and his enthusiasm. He bounces like Tigger!

Here's evidence. Ever handled a snake before you fed it? Most won't eat right after, correct? Yep, that's stress.

Actually, most of my snakes I feed WHILE holding them. They have no issues. The only ones I don't do this to are the brand new hatchlings as I want them used to the house first. I've had to answer the door before with a snake wrapped around my arm, 'happily' working down a f/t mouse.

We don't handle after because sudden high activity after a large meal can cause vomiting. This happens in cats, dogs, and people as well. Actually, in dogs it can go even a step further and cause their stomach to actually *flip* which is often fatal.

Cornsnakes right? As a general rule, handling should be avoided before and after feeding as stress can cause a snake to not eat or to regurge.

As a defense mechanism snakes regurge, under stress a snake regurges to allow themselves to move quicker to evade predation. But that's not stress related right?

Dogs and cats do that too. They also void their bowels and bladder as a stress response.

It's NOT JUST or ONLY a stress response. It can also be pure and simple nausea.

And yes, I was talking about corn snakes, once again in a thread ABOUT corn snakes.

As a rule of thumb, snakes should not be handled after feeding to give them time to digest, as the added activity and/or stress can cause a regurge. Handling before has only prevented eating in one of my snakes, and he is such a stress case over all that he is almost never handled unless I am doing a health check on him. He even gets the bottom bin in the rack system as he is 'happiest' there.

I could go and handle Lacy, Liam, Tor, Dier, Mal, Es', El', What-The, Heck, Keeper, Vanay, Nautley, Mari, Brin, OR Lesh and have them all eat after, and from my fingers, and keep eating in my hands.
