Black or White Snake?

Lyion

~♪Sorry and Thanks♪~
My mother (I live in her house as I'm still in collage) believes that snakes are like birds- having more than ten is bizarre. Despite my explanation that snakes don't need very much attention (They don't need mental or social stimulation, are feed once a week and poop once a week.), she won't allow more than two snakes into the house. When we were at a reptile show recently, she eyed a black in white snake and was very close to allowing one more snake into the house until she noticed it was a king snake. Instant decline, mainly because I once accidently put my hatchling in with the yearing, whereas that mistake with a king would obviously be fatal. She told me afterwards that she would have gotten it for me if it weren't for the fact that is was a king because she loves the coloration so much. :eek1:

So, now I am looking for a new snake, one that is:

1. Black and white (No milks as they eventually turn black)

2. A colubrid

3. Laid back

4. Do not get any larger than a cornsnake

Please help me find one, and also If there is a black and white corn morph that i am unaware of please do tell :spinner:

Thanks in advance!

I say go get what you want and bring it home...is she really going to make you get rid of it? (My mom hates snakes, is afraid of snakes, would never, ever ever ever let me have any reptile when I was younger....but I am now living with her as I go to college and forced all my snakes upon her  She survived)

But anyway, maybe find a good contrasting anery or ultra anery adult.

Otherwise look into an anery honduran milksnake. (I'm not sure what their attitude is like)

For possible non-colubrids, maybe check out the mexican rosy boa or anery kenyan sand boa.

(rosy boas, from what I hear, tend to be on the very laid back side)

You have to remember that anery corns grey and yellow out a lot though, they don't stay black and white. I had a black and white rosy boa for a while that was really awesome, I don't know his exact morph, I think he was a different locale.

I third the vote for an anery kenyan sand boa. I have one myself, he is gorgeous, and will stay bright black and white all his life. Even easier to care for than a corn.

Jason at Jason's Jungle has some extraordinary anerys.

I say go for a white-sided black rat snake. Their color isn't a true black, but many are so dark brown that they appear black. You may see them listed by their nick-name - licorice black rat. I've owned 3 black rat snakes and they have all been absolute sweethearts. I lost the white-sided brindle female as a hatchling, but gave the 2 older males away to friends that fell in love with them. One day I hope to get another one. This is Freddie:

Axanthic Hognose? Just see if she'll buy you one for x-mas, it's not like they're expensive or anything lol

Ooooh, I 2nd this!

Oh my... I'd never even heard of a Pied Persian rat snake... But WOW! They're gorgeous!

Here's a pic, courtesy of google...

So... Yeah... I'm Ditto'ing the Pied Persian and the White-sided black rat suggestions... :p

Love the look of that snake, but what're the prices like, I found one site with just a normal Persian for $350

Good question, I'm wondering about that now, too... (Not that I need another rat snake on my "someday" list.. lol) There's none listed on Fauna or KS right now...

Oooh, I like that pied rat snake too :D (that's my vote!)

Just to show how much anery corns grey out:

Still cheaper than the axanthic hognose (which is an amazingly adorable snake that I dream about owning someday).

But they all don't lighten to a grey color. Some are quite black on a silver grey ground color as adults and even if they are quite brown as a subadult, they often get darker once they reach maturity, and sometimes keep getting darker with age. True, you still have the yellow, but I've seen specimens with minimal yellow. Only problem is you don't know how a hatchling will turn out as an adult, but you can have a pretty good idea if you see the parents. If the anery zigzag female hadn't passed due to egg-binding, she probably would be much darker today.
