Dee Dee: What The Heck Is She?

New member
So, I've been thinking tentatively about breeding lately. Not necessarily corns, nor necessarily any time soon... But in all this thinking, I started thinking, if I do decide to breed, I really want to do some test breeding with Dee Dee, my little "mystery" Corn girl.

But then I started thinking, what the heck would I pair her with? I don't have the faintest idea what she even is! Well, other than the apparent involvement of Motley--but beyond that...

So, I defer to the experts. Any guesses as to what she might be, and any recommendations as to what would be a good male to pair her with some day, are all very much welcomed!

We'll start out with a baby picture. This was taken not long after I got her. She's a 2011 hatch. This was taken in October, 2011. She weighed around 8-10 grams at the time.

Another baby pic, and probably the best pic I have to show her eyes. Taken in December.

Again, taken in December; best ventral shot I have:

Taken in April.

Now for the pictures taken today. Haven't weighed her recently, but she's about to move up to small hoppers, to give an idea of size.

Thank yoooouuu!

Ultramel lavender? :shrugs: (does that exist?)

Looking at her, then looking at Romance, I see ultramel in there.. but the base color?
Do you know the back-round at all? Could she be a TS?
Maybe I'm just ultra-mel crazy lately o.o

I would use a hypo lav to start. Not that I think that's what she is, but she looks like she could be a hypo lave something to me. That is an interesting belly. There are a few morphs which seem to affect motley so there are still a few checkers on the belly- cinder and sunkissed come to mind...

Ultramel Anery? The eyes are crazy cool looking, but i don't thinks she's a pure corn because of them. If you could get another picture outside, in maybe the setting sun (or rising if your up).

He's gorgeous!

I actually did get to see the parents on one occasion. My memory's a bit crappy, but I recall them looking like a lighter version of your Romance.

What little I know of the background: The breeder acquired the parents from someone who didn't really know what they were, or so the story goes. He never did any test breeding, that I know of, with either parent to figure out what genes are involved. The parents look very similar to each other, and the babies all appeared to be one phenotype (the only obvious variation was Motley--some obviously homo mot, some not, and I can't remember if either parent looked homo Motley or not), so my best guess on the parents is that they're the same phenotype, maybe clutchmates.

The breeder was marketing these guys as "mystery" genetic Corns at the SLC, Utah expo in October. One thing that stuck out was there was a lot of variation in pattern. Normals, Motleys, and a couple with absolutely insane patterns and clear bellies--my first thought was something I'd read/heard about how Motley and Sunkissed do crazy things to the pattern when mixed, but, other than those couple wild-patterned hatchlings, there were no other apparent signs of Sunkissed involvement in the clutch, so those two might have just been an interesting fluke...

Airidies-- The pictures today were taken in the setting sun, just not all the way outside--rather, in the light coming in from the screen door. :)

It very easily could be TS; it looks ALOT like linebred ghosts I bred from the TS line. The belly pattern also looks like a ghost motley TS I have here.

VMS has closed out their TS project, it's not out of the realm of possibility a local breeder (VMS in CO, this breeder attended in SLC UT) bought out a bunch, labelled them "mystery", as Sean has one still listed as "genetics unknown" and you were lucky enough to pick one up :*)

I've had TS stuff for 8 years, I think it is a Tequila Sunrise line, and it's an ultramel anery A motley. I could be completely wrong, but I'd place a very small wager it is :)

Romance is one of Sean's TS aneries. He was labeled as "genetics unknown" also, but the lady who was at Sean's table said he's ultramel anery motley, and the pink gene, she said strawberry, but who knows lol.

Dee Dee does look an awful lot like Sean's yearlings from the TS line.

The breeder was originally out of the Illinois area, not SLC--he mentioned he'd just moved to SLC recently... But that certainly doesn't eliminate the TS line possibility. :) The "genetics unknown" one you mentioned on VMS's website almost looks like it could've been out of the same clutch!

And if that's the case, it looks like I got one heck of a deal! He was selling them at something like $30 each--I got Dee Dee for $15. :p
