Adopting a snake with an odd feeding schedule.

Hi! My fiance and I are talking about adopting a beautiful, fully grown corn from his work friend. He is 6 years old. The work friend has had him for over 4 years. She purchased him from a younger kid who had him from babyhood. He would be my first ever snake. I am very excited!

She was telling my fiance about his feeding schedule. They feed him 2 adult mice every 3 weeks. Which seems odd to me, I thought adult corns were fed once per week generally, and only one mouse. I have never heard of feeding double. I thought if the snake was needing more, you just went up a size in mouse. Maybe I am totally wrong!!

From what my fiance told me they seem like great owners, she showed him pictures and talked all about the snake. The only thing that threw me off was the feeding schedule. Any advice I'd really appreciate. Do I keep the same schedule or adjust? It could be very stressful for him in his new environment.

I'd let him settle in first before switching his feeding schedule and amount. Adult corns can go longer between feedings but I think depending on his size and appetite you should be ok feeding him once every 5-7 days. I'd probably stick with one good size adult mouse again depends on his weight. Just my opinion, I'm sure other folks may have their opinions here. You can also check the Munson feeding chart for more accuracy. I think there's a link to it somewhere here.

I really appreciate the advice. Fiance says they claimed he was 6 feet long, fairly large. I will definitely let him settle first, he may not even want any food until he gets used to us. I will check the chart out, thank you!

Well now I'm reading about corn size and it says they generally don't grow past 5 feet... so I think fiance was either tired from work or they measured incorrectly. I'll have to find out some more info tomorrow when he talks with his coworker. :)

I'm going to respectfully disagree with Lt. Dan. I wouldn't go any more frequent than every two weeks, and if I did that, I'd drop him down to one medium adult mouse. I have a bunch of big males, and a couple big females, on a three week schedule. They continue to put on 5-10 grams per feeding. I don't think a young, 800-1000 gram cornsnake is particularly healthy. I'd rather see a slow but steady growth, after about 500 grams.

There are 6ft corns out there but I'm willing to bet they measured his shed. Sheds stretch, so it's not a very accurate way to measure snakes.

As far as feeding, I agree with Nanci. One prey item every 10-14 days is sufficient for an adult corn.

I feed all my boys a single adult mouse every other week.
I have one girl who got really fat last year that is eating a weanling every two-three weeks. Once she is back to normal she will only be getting fed a single adult every two weeks like the boys.

Yup, have to agree with the other girls on this one! One large mouse every 2 weeks is good, especially for one that large. Here is the Munson plan, your snake is probably at the top of the feeding chart, but it will give you an idea of what most corn owners do and have found to work best.

If he really is a big guy, would a 3 week schedule suffice for him? I've never heard of feeding 2 mice at the same time. I will have to measure and weigh him once we have him.

It is possible for adult Corns to be that large, I fostered one that was 1100 grams.
I agree that he should be on a every 2 or 3 week feeding schedule. Depending on his body composition, if he's not overweight (he could just be a large Corn), I would stick with one large or xl adult mouse, every 2-3 weeks.
If he is overweight, I would probably feed a small to medium adult mouse every 2-3 weeks (until he gets back to a healthy weight).

When you get a chance, can you post full body pics?

We definitely love pics! I'm glad others could give you better advice. That's what this group is all about :)
