How can I treat hector's mouse bite next time it happens? the mice usually don't have a chance to bite him but it's happened; as it will when you feed live mice.. Like should I get some kind of antiseptic safe for snakes or an ointment? So confusedd..

The thumping is referring to stunning them so they are alive, but not as mobile. I know a friend who has some picky eaters actually breaks their necks so they are very alive, but can not run or bite. I couldn't do it personally and these are adult rats as he has big snakes, but it is safer if you have one that doesn't want to convert. Have you ever even tried F/T? Maybe slitting the mouse to expose a stronger scent and warming would work.

Next time? And hasn't your vet advised you?

We already grilled this guy good in the other thread about feeding live. I think he gets the message. He still has a valid question about what ointment to use, though.

I had a "rescue" BP with a very bad nose rub into the flesh/bone from a screen cage it was kept in.
I used a light wash with Chlorehexadine ( Novalsan), although you could probably use an antibacterial soap to wash and dry as well. Then a light application of Neosporin twice daily. I couldn't believe how she healed, just about perfect, pigment came back as well ( with each shed), you can now barely see the scarring.

You need a reptile-safe disinfectant fluid to wipe minor wounds with. I use Tamodine for minor abrasions.

Obviously the grilling didn't work... he is still planning on feeding live.

:headbang:

I've used Neosporin successfully...But the stuff I've had the greatest success with is this stinky brown stuff in a tin my mum always used on our cuts when we were growing up...I'll e-mail her and ask her what it's called...

I don't have a tin of it at my home. Next time I'm over at my mother's if I remember, I'll write down the ingredients. She did mention that she thought you could pick it up at CVS.

The reason why we figured out that it worked great for reptiles is that my mother's Leos got into a fight and the one took a massive chunk out of the other. My mum put this stuff on her for a few days and it healed beautifully. My mum's a retired vet tech (used to work for the Philadelphia Zoo), so I'm sure she reviewed the ingredients before she put it on the gecko.

cool I'm interested! I guess it would qualify as a homeopathic?

Did I miss the discussion about why you are feeding live mice to your snake?

easily prevented by not feeding live, or thump the mouse first.

I would "thump" the mouse before feeding it to him.

Well you know I have to say this and I know you have heard before. Instead of treating the ailment just fix the issue all together.

Easy question. What do you do when you grab ahold of a hot frying pan? You burn yourself. So do you keep on grabbing onto that frying pan in the future when its hot? no, you grab a Mitten and hold onto it. Simple as that.
In your case you can feed Frozen. Most corn snakes will eat frozen thawed easily. And you can't tell me other wise. I have wild caught snakes that eat frozen here with thinking twice. My fox snake didn't hesitate and ate a thawed mouse first time around.

Here is what a corn snake looks like after being attacked my a mouse years later. This animal was a rescue I picked up from the Humane society.

So please reconsider feeding live and treat your snake as prescribed by a Vet.

actually you lose nutrients anytime you freeze anything. As a matter of fact, you lose pretty much all your B vitamins. This is why I have to sprinkle vitamins on my ig's salad everyday.
I guess if you are going the F/T method, you should already be dusting them with vitamins. Otherwise I'm guessing there are some unhealthy snakes out there.

Why does everyone attack people who feed live? Yes it can be more dangerous for the snake, but also better nutrients. I can see the argument both sides but all y'all do is attack someone who questions it. I guess if the snake doesn't take F/T they should just starve to death so they don't get hurt?

This is the response I was getting on the OP first thread.
