UPS/ShipYourReptiles.com

A little back story all overnight UPS packages in the U.S. get routed though Louisville Ky. There was a rumor a few years ago of one of the “Throwers” at the UPS overnight hub in Louisville that would take the red and white superior boxes off for inspection. The sender would be called and notified that UPS did not ship reptiles and they needed to come pick it up. So when someone in say Fl gets that call they most likely would not bother driving up so this guy would take them home. I was told most ended up getting sold at shows.

Thats a terrible story what a jerk. However, not all packages go through that hub it does depend on where your shipping, but something like that could happen anywhere- you have me rethinking my superior boxes...

Well SYR.com issued me a full refund and apologized for the inconvenience. I realize they cant control what individual UPS locations do, and they told me that UPS has said they will not sent out a notice to all stations/employees about a relatively small company that is approved to ship snakes. So my local UPS not knowing isnt the fault of SYR.com.

I'd sugget asking SYR.com to provide a printable version of the agreement with UPS so that anyone wanting to ship through them can provide their local UPS people with proof it's legit.

You cannot ship snakes via the USPS... It uis illegal for both the sender and reciever and one can face some pretty harsh consequnces..

If you are willing to spend $50 to get Fed-Ex certified, you wouldn't even have problem with there policy. But to ship normal stuff all you have to do is get Fed-Ex registered, and thats free. I mostly just posted because I want to keep up to date on this issue. ;)

$50 to get certified? Since when?

It is illegal to ship snakes AND scorpions USPS.
HUGE no-no.
I was going to say something, but did not want to appear unusually harsh responding to David (sometimes restraint is a good thing!)

Anyway, breaking federal law by shipping snakes and scorpions will not be doing our hobby any favors, I can tell you that!!

When I became FedEx certified, it was free. But you had to check the right box so you wouldn't get charged to ship the test package. Make sure you get ALL the details from your rep. My rep was REALLY good, she took care of everything.

Its not a matter of sounding harsh... Its a matter of doing what is legally abiding and not having the community dumped on and giving more power to stupid things like 669...

Unfortunantly our community is under attack, and at this point it is very, very crucial to post correct information, regardless if it is David or Obama..

Very true Tim, I should have spoke up sooner. I must add I had MAJOR reservations about a breeder who would sell a King Rat to a child....but illegally shipping said snake has cinched it....as far as I'm concerned.

Legally she has to label it with the common name and latin name, but I _believe_ that just needs to be on a shipping bill easily accessible if they open the box, and on the outside it only has to say live harmless reptile. At least that's what I got from the huge discussion we just had here, but I don't remember what the thread was called.

Nanci is correct here. BUT..no where does it state how big the letters have to be one the box. Just says it's supposed to be there. Some times one cant help it if they write the info in the top corner of the box and their hand writing is sloppy and small then take it to a different drop off point. :D

How would I get FedEx certified? Me and a friend are going to be breeding our ball pythons and corns, and it would make it a LOT easier to sell the babies if we got certified. Buuuuut.. do I need a small business liscense or anything? And arent you only supposed to ship reptiles business-to-business anyway?

Beth it is not about the age it is about experience and the lady talked to my mom and she said she thought I could do well with it

To be honest, it's a rare occasion that some one even ask if you are certified FedEx. They don't care as long as you sell them the snake and ship it. No you dont need a small business license. No we dont have to ship business to business. Only part I don't like about being certified is they don't allow you to insure the package. If you animals die in shipping, not their problem. They wont reimberse for late arrivles either. Guess all companies have their draw backs.

Well I dont think the buyers would care, but our local FedEx might not be too happy about it if they found out we were shipping reptiles without being certified for it, etc.... the recent UPS thing has made me wonder about it, thats all.

I know you can't ship snakes usps, but you can legally ship geckos and what most people don't know is ALL UPS packages go through usps air freight anyway. So now if SYR can legally ship snakes through UPS which no one else can they are breaking federal laws as well unless they have something worked out with them. SYR is way cheaper to ship for sure even though I have a UPS account I will be using them as well just to save my cutomers money.

Beth, you'd be amazed what well-known breeders use, or used to use, UPS. I'mnot naming names, but I'm sure you know some. People I respect, a LOT.
