This reminds me that I need new feeding bins for my snakes. All my corns look like that, all crammed in... poor snakies!

Ok. Here's why... When I first got Penny, she had been fed in her viv. She was almost 5ft and had an insane feeding response. Dangerous even. I mean if she smelled thawing rodent, you couldn't get near her. I decided to try using a bin for her to see if it changed her behavior any. The first few times eating in the bin, she would still strike at me through the bin, but after about 6 feedings, she mellowed out. Now, she still eats every time, but there is none of the feeding aggression that she used to have. Maybe because of the bin, maybe not, but I am happy with her attitude so I am not changing the routine.

I had always fed in separate bins. A few months ago I have started feeding inside their vivs because I was getting lazy. I regret it now because I get tagged more now than I had in all my years having snakes. So, I started feeding in separate bins again. Im tired of getting bit LOL!

I agree. I think you are less likely to get bit, because they usually just associate eating with the bin, not their viv. My snakes don't "assume the feeding position" until they go in the feeding bin. I had friends who fed in the viv and their snakes would go into feeding mode as soon as the tank lid was opened. It was a lot harder to pick them up without being struck at!
Nice boa, btw. . . . is that bin too small? Look at all the empty space in the one corner ~LOL~ She's not even spilling over the sides yet!

To each their own ~shrugs~ You'll also notice that at the end of the article the author says that if you do it and it works for you, there is no harm in it.
It also gives me a chance to sanitize their tanks without them in there, clean decor, water bowls, refill, etc without having to worry about disturbing the snake while it is eating or worrying about it climbing out when the lid is off as I am moving around the snake room. I think you will find that there is just as much anecdotal evidence for both sides, just like a lot of issues. I'm not saying everyone has to do it just because I do

The author is my best friend, for what it's worth. If you have five snakes, knock yourself out. I have 40+ adults, and over a hundred hatchlings at any given time. It is simply not possible, I tried that "technique," for a year and was bitten so much my fingers still hurt.

Sure, I can see where it would be a major pain once you get above a certain number. I have 20 snakes and it takes me a few hours to go through the process, usually why I do 1/2 one day and 1/2 the next.
I have started to feed my sunkissed in his viv because he was not feeding well. He was very skittish when I first got him, and I think handling him as I transferred him would stress him out, so now I put the pinkie in with him and he is much better. I do make sure the pinkie is in a clear spot so he doesn't ingest his substrate (good point, Josh, I forgot to mention that!)

FWIW, I don't feed all of my snakes in separate bins (I actually fed her mate in her cage while she was in the bin). When I did with this girl, I did notice a behavior change I was happy with. Maybe it was the bin, maybe not. BUT I have not had a 20 pound snake striking at me since, so I am not changing it now...
